INTHEBLACK - Out-moocing the MOOCs: Traditional institutions fight back MOOCs – massive open online courses – were hailed as the great disruptor to higher education. Now, the institutions they were predicted to dislodge are adapting MOOCs and using their best features for on-campus teaching. For years, little had changed within higher education, until a breed of online providers brought the rumblings of a revolution. Carrying the undistinguished acronym of MOOCs, massive open online courses were hailed as the radical future of learning – a fee-free model that threatened the hallowed halls of universities and the business models that supported them. Now that the dust has settled, it appears MOOCs have indeed signalled a fundamental shift in higher education. Instead of replacing on-campus learning, though, MOOCs are assisting bricks-and-mortar universities to engage with the cutting edge of teaching innovation.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology to launch half MOOC, half in-person master's degree program The Massachusetts Institute of Technology will next year launch the first of what could be several pilots to determine if pieces of what it has provided face-to-face can be delivered through massive open online courses. The institute on Wednesday announced an alternative path for students to enroll in its supply chain management program and earn a master’s of engineering in logistics degree. Instead of students being required to move to Cambridge, Mass., for the duration of the 10-month program, MIT will offer half of the program through MOOCs, saving students tens of thousands of dollars in tuition. Learners who complete the MOOCs but can’t afford or simply aren’t interested in finishing the degree won’t walk away empty-handed. MIT will offer those learners a new microcredential, called a MicroMaster’s, and is working with other organizations that offer supply chain management programs to ensure they will accept the credential toward degree completion.

Microsoft Azure boss Scott Guthrie: Cloud price war with Amazon Web Services is winding down A few years ago, most of the cloud-computing headlines were about price cuts, as Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services battled to be low-price leaders. Those days are ending, according to Scott Guthrie, executive VP of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise Group — though one prominent analyst partially disagreed. “For the most part, we (Azure and AWS) aren’t competing on price,” Guthrie said during a 45-minute on-stage interview at a Deutsche Bank technology conference Tuesday.
Responsive Design Is So ... 2013 Mashable dubbed 2013 the year of responsive web design. Good timing, as the consumption of mobile content began an upward trajectory. Pope Francis even got on board, sending out his first tweet. But a lot has changed since then. Today, mobile devices are a fixture of daily life — changing how businesses operate, people connect, products are purchased and the way opinions are shaped.
The 20 best tools for online collaboration A team of designers does not always work in the same office; you work in distributed groups, some of you may be working from home, and clients can be based all over the world. This is where collaboration tools come in – they make it easier and faster for designers to get feedback and approve artwork in a professional manner, and they come in all sort of forms, from free Android apps to Chrome extensions. Some are created specifically for designers, some serve as a concept crafting whiteboard often with tools to make simple annotations, and some are all-in-one web apps that include an element of project management. Where Creativity Comes From Creativity has enabled humans to conquer every corner of this planet. Indeed our yen for innovation is one of the most salient characteristics of our kind. Yet our species is not the only one given to inventiveness. Researchers have documented the capacity in a growing number of other creatures. And some of their findings run counter to received wisdom about the origins of creativity and how to foster it in human minds. The old adage about inventiveness, of course, is that it stems from necessity.
