ITA Software by Google John Talbott's Paris: The Maison de Verre in the 7th. Been on my "life list" for quite a while. A few years ago Alice Steinbach, in researching her 2005 book, "Educating Alice: Adventures of a Curious Woman," went to the Glass House in Paris and the verbal and written description of her visit then made a lasting impression on me. So, it's been on my "life list" for some while. Then, my heart sank when I read the New York Times article by Nicolai Ouroussoff a while back implying that the new owners (Stéphane and Robert Rubin of NYC) were restoring it and I gave up hope of ever visiting Pierre Chareau’s 1928-32 masterpiece. The NYT photo link (that is actually from “La Maison de Verre” published by Thames & Hudson) is so much better than mine you should go to the link. In any case, a few weeks ago a wonderfully thoughtful, informed and kind architectural historian friend, Guio by name, wrote me that he wanted to visit it; did I wish to accompany him? It was one of those breakthough Spring days in Paris, brilliantly sunny and suddenly warm after a lousy March and April.

London Home Stay | The English Studio A Home Stay makes learning English in London even easier. Because your hosts will be native English speakers, and there’s no better way to practise what you learn in your English lessons than by chatting to people who live here. Breakfast is usually included and sometimes other meals if you want them too. Rooms are cleaned and bed linen and towels changed weekly. As London is a large, multi-cultural city, the families offering Home Stays come from many ethnic backgrounds, but rest assured: English is always the main language spoken in the house. Our Home Stays are managed by agencies that are registered with the British Council or ourselves. Twin rooms for Home Stays can only be booked for students who are travelling together.

PARIS | Architravel | Cities Architectural Guide | online contemporary architecture travel guide. Paris is an unusually coherent architectural creature. Paris' modern buildings have developed gradually out of earlier styles; palaces and mansions have survived by transforming into apartments and shops, and most streets harbor a range of buildings from various centuries. Paris evolved out of a walled city, and some historians argue that this alone has given Paris a certain logic that London or Boston lacks. Paris has really never lost its walls: 900 years after the 12th-century wall of Philippe August, it is now a city walled by its ring-road, the Péripherique highway. This succession of walls, gradually torn down and rebuilt through the centuries, has created a spiraling city, which grew gradually out from the Ile de la Cité. The Medieval Period (1100-1526) Romans had invaded Paris in 52 BC. The advent of Gothic style of architecture ushered in new engineering methods. The Renaissance (1515-1643) French Baroque and Classicism (17th Century) Rococo (1715-1774) Art Nouveau (1893-1917)
