14 millions d'images du domaine public mises en ligne par Internet Archive ! « La numérisation se focalise sur le texte et néglige souvent les images. » Nous nous en faisons régulièrement l’écho pour nous en féliciter : de plus en plus de livres du domaine public sont numérisés et, à ce titre, Internet Archive constitue sans conteste l’un des plus gros dépôts au monde. Cette numérisation gagne chaque année en intelligence, avec notamment le renseignement des métadonnées et les possibilités de la recherche plein texte qui facilitent leur consultation.Mais il n’en va pas toujours de même pour les nombreuses illustrations (croquis, dessins, cartes, photographies...) qui accompagnent ces ouvrages. Elles sont en effet trop souvent liées aux livres qui les contiennent, peuvent ne pas avoir de légende et échappent aux finesses de l’OCR. Un soin tout particulier a été apporté aux éléments connexes à l’image permettant de l’identifier et de la trouver plus facilement. Une véritable mine d’or ! Demain on développe un tel outil pour Gallica ?

La liste ne peut donc que s’agrandir. Pour les cinéphiles, c’est une véritable caverne d’Ali Baba. On peut déjà y trouver près de 5000 long-métrages, regardables en streaming, mais également disponibles en téléchargement (très souvent de haute qualité). Today is going to be awesome. Reflections on Overwhelm I realized this morning that I had not written a blog post with more than 50 words in a long time. And that’s because I’ve been really, well, you guessed it: BUSY. You may recall if you’ve been reading this blog for a few years that I’ve expressed here — more than once — that I do not like the word “busy,” and that I was going to try to avoid using it. But the truth is I keep coming back to that word to describe my life, along with words like “buried” and “slammed” and “overwhelmed with work.” You’d think if you heard me talk like this (or received one of my “sorry I can’t help you right now I’m drowning in deadlines” email responses) that I was, in fact, miserable. But the truth is, I’m not miserable. I just have a shit-ton of work, and I am very happy about having a shit-ton of work, which makes me think I should probably question my dramatic word choices (e.g.: “buried” & “drowning”), but that’s another blog post entirely. The British Library Puts 1,000,000 Images into the Public Domain, Making Them Free to Reuse & Remix Earlier this week, Oxford's Bodleian Library announced that it had digitized a 550 year old copy of the Gutenberg Bible along with a number of other ancient bibles, some of them quite beautiful. Not to be outdone, the British Library came out with its own announcement on Thursday: We have released over a million images onto Flickr Commons for anyone to use, remix and repurpose. These images were taken from the pages of 17th, 18th and 19th century books digitised by Microsoft who then generously gifted the scanned images to us, allowing us to release them back into the Public Domain. The images themselves cover a startling mix of subjects: There are maps, geological diagrams, beautiful illustrations, comical satire, illuminated and decorative letters, colourful illustrations, landscapes, wall-paintings and so much more that even we are not aware of.
