Suntech, société cotée à New York, est victime d'une crise du secteur qui, après avoir frappé l'Europe et les Etats-Unis, fait aussi des ravages en Chine. Un porte-parole de la firme n'a pas souhaité commenter l'annonce de l'agence de presse officielle chinoise. Cette crise a été précipitée par l'effondrement des prix des panneaux solaires : moins 45 % en 2011, puis de nouveau moins 25 % en 2012, selon les calculs du cabinet IHS. Le marché mondial du solaire est de plus en plus difficile, en raison des freins mis par les Etats-Unis et l'Europe à des exportateurs chinois envahissants. Suntech n'a pas réalisé de profit depuis 2011, et est lourdement handicapée par une fraude : elle a racheté une compagnie sur la base de garanties financières, qui se sont révélées inexistantes.
