Rainwater Is No Longer Safe to Drink, Study Says The environment contains thousands of hazardous chemicals from plastics.A recent study shows that at least four of these plastics have pushed us beyond safe limits for plastic contamination.Drinking rainwater could negatively impact human health around the world. Remember when you were a kid, and it was fun to tip your head back during a rainstorm and open your mouth to drink the drops? You shouldn’t do that anymore. That’s because you’ll be ingesting too many particles of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), the hazardous chemicals that leach from the ultra-durable plastics we’ve created for about the past 120 years. Earth is officially past its safe zone for plastic contamination. “Based on the latest U.S. guidelines for PFOA in drinking water, rainwater everywhere would be judged unsafe to drink. There are thousands of different PFAS substances floating around. PFAS continually cycles from the sea into the air through sea spray, the study found. Andrew FoxGetty Images

6 New Kinds of Anxiety the Internet Gave Us For 99 percent of human history, there was no such thing as talking to a person who wasn't in front of you. No phones, no instant communication from farther than shouting distance. If that doesn't absolutely blow your mind, you haven't thought it through -- the first man to ever wake up and realize that he had drunk dialed an ex-girlfriend the night before must have felt like he had been cursed with a destructive new form of black magic. Likewise, we're about 20 years into widespread Internet use now, and it's easy to forget how many of the day-to-day anxieties we deal with are brand new to the species. #6. Medioimages/Photodisc/Photodisc/Getty Images You know what allows humans to live together in a society? ... from the button that means, "send this crude joke to the entire company, including the aforementioned boss, and instantly destroy your entire life forever": You might say, "Well, that's what you get for saying mean things about your superiors over email, jackass!" #5. #4.

Start a Local Project | USA National Phenology Network If you are interested in what’s happening to plant and animal populations in your community, either on a seasonal or long-term basis, turn your interest into a valuable community science project. Nature’s Notebook is a great tool for answering questions about the timing of plant and animal life cycle events. Local Phenology Projects (LPPs), or organizations which engage the community in phenology monitoring exist to explore bud and flower break, pollination, fruit harvest, leaf fall, and more. These projects are emerging at schools, parks, and nature centers across the country and are an excellent way to teach observation skills and conduct hands-on, experiential and place-based education. Science or outreach staff or volunteers leading Nature's Notebook efforts at LPPs are known as Local Phenology Leaders (LPLs). There are many different ways to get started, from training others, to creating a phenology monitoring group, to starting a phenology trail in your town. Set Up a Group Site
