Related: Stuff to readNot Here to Dance his is the story of the greatest night of my entire life. This is about a moment from the Ballon d’Or ceremony that I will never forget, even if I lived 200 years. It has nothing to do with dancing. It has everything to do with respect. Mark Zuckerberg Has Lost Control of Facebook by Guy Verhofstadt There can be little doubt that monopoly control over millions of people’s personal data and the flow of news and information online poses a clear and present threat to democracy. And Facebook’s management has shown time and again that it cannot be trusted to behave responsibly. BRUSSELS – When Mark Zuckerberg, the chairman, CEO, and co-founder of Facebook, appeared before the European Parliament in May, I suggested to him that he had lost control of his company. As one of the few politicians ever to have confronted Zuckerberg in person, I was happy for the opportunity.
The Daring Journey Across Antarctica That Became a Nightmare Flying to Antarctica from New Zealand is like changing planets. Five hours south from Christchurch, inside the giant windowless cylinder of a C-17 jet, and you step out onto white ice that extends to the horizon in all directions. A bus ride takes you over a black hill into an unexpectedly large collection of warehouses and miscellaneous buildings, clustered on the black volcanic rubble at the end of Hut Point Peninsula, Ross Island. That’s McMurdo Station, home every Antarctic summer to around a thousand people.

Searching for Life in a Martian Landscape Mary Beth Wilhelm’s right arm shot out of the passenger window, and the convoy of vehicles behind her crunched to a stop. Spread among two trucks and an SUV, her four colleagues and I squinted and craned our necks, wondering what had caught her eye in the colorless wasteland of the northern Atacama Desert. She opened the door of our SUV and hoisted herself out. The temperature was somewhere around 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and the mid-day gales were already picking up. Nothing beckoned.
2019 - The Year AI Will Move Into The Mainstream Artificial IntelligenceGetty Business leaders have traditionally had a somewhat complicated relationship with technology. Many of them instinctively know that its deployment could be transformative for their business although they lack the deep knowledge required to fully understand how and when to invest. Recent research from Fujitsu suggests that levels of uncertainty around the way businesses should plan for imminent technologically-driven change are so high that business leaders around the world favour a co-ordinated, global approach led by intergovernmental bodies and governments. Whereas I do not think these levels of uncertainty and doubt are going to disappear, I do believe that when it comes to the use of AI, data analytics and data science, 2019 will be the year when we see a sharp increase in its use by organisations of all sizes. What’s driving this trend?
Manufacturing the future: The next era of global growth and innovation Manufacturing remains a critical force in both advanced and developing economies. But the sector has changed, bringing new opportunities and challenges to business leaders and policy makers. The global manufacturing sector has undergone a tumultuous decade: large developing economies leaped into the first tier of manufacturing nations, a severe recession choked off demand, and manufacturing employment fell at an accelerated rate in advanced economies. Still, manufacturing remains critically important to both the developing and the advanced world.
