The building houses a museum and art gallery with a collection of fine and decorative art as well as a natural history collection. The concept for the building was originally commissioned as a memorial to Prince Albert and intended to contain room for lectures, museum, picture gallery and a reference library for students by British Association for the Advancement of Science.[1] The funding for the building was agreed to be provided by the inhabitants of Dundee. Although the city could not afford such a lavish memorial outright, it did contribute £300. A guaranteed fund of £4,205 15/- from 168 contributors was collected which included a munificent gift from the Baxter family which totalled £420.[1] Two further sections, which extended the building by four art galleries and four museum galleries, were added by 1889. In 1976, cracks were discovered in south-east corner of the building.

Christ Church Picture Gallery | Christ Church, Oxford Christ Church is unique among the Oxford and Cambridge colleges in possessing an important collection of Old Master paintings and drawings, housed in a purpose-built Gallery of considerable architectural interest in itself. General John Guise bequeathed his collection of over 200 paintings and almost 2000 drawings to his former college, where it arrived after his death in 1765. This extraordinary gift enabled Christ Church to introduce art into Oxford education without the necessity to travel to Italy or to gain access to stately homes, which still held the majority of art collections in the country. At that date the collection was unequalled by any other Oxford institution. Bernardo Daddi Four Musical Angels (about 1340) (Egg tempera on wood - Fox-Strangways Gift, 1828) The collection was reinforced by the subsequent gifts by the Hon. A number of subsequent gifts and bequests of paintings enabled Christ Church’s art collection to grow.
