101 Short Stories that Will Leave You Smiling, Crying and Thinking post written by: Marc Chernoff Email Since its inception eighteen months ago, our sister site Makes Me Think (MMT) has truly evolved into a remarkable online community. Every day, users share their thought-provoking life stories and vote on stories that other users have shared. Some are happy, some are sad, and others twist your emotions, pulling them in several directions at once. As stated on the MMT About page, sometimes the most random everyday encounters force us to stop and rethink the truths and perceptions we have ingrained in our minds. I believe the 101 stories listed below perfectly fulfill that description. What do you think?
10 Mind-Blowing Theories That Will Change Your Perception of the World Reality is not as obvious and simple as we like to think. Some of the things that we accept as true at face value are notoriously wrong. Scientists and philosophers have made every effort to change our common perceptions of it. The 10 examples below will show you what I mean. 1. Great glaciation. Great glaciation is the theory of the final state that our universe is heading toward. 2. Solipsism is a philosophical theory, which asserts that nothing exists but the individual’s consciousness. Don’t you believe me? As a result, which parts of existence can we not doubt? 3. George Berkeley, the father of Idealism, argued that everything exists as an idea in someone’s mind. The idea being that if the stone really only exists in his imagination, he could not have kicked it with his eyes closed. 4. Everybody has heard of Plato. In addition to this stunning statement, Plato, being a monist, said that everything is made of a single substance. 5. 6. Enternalism is the exact opposite of presentism.

A Mathematical Proof That The Universe Could Have Formed Spontaneously From Nothing — The Physics arXiv Blog One of the great theories of modern cosmology is that the universe began in a Big Bang. This is not just an idea but a scientific theory backed up by numerous lines of evidence. For a start, there is the cosmic microwave background, which is a kind of echo of the big bang; then there is the ongoing expansion of the cosmos, which when imagined backwards, hints at a Big Bang-type origin; and the abundance of the primordial elements, such as helium-4, helium-3, deuterium and so on, can all be calculated using the theory. But that still leaves a huge puzzle. What caused the Big Bang itself? That’s plausible, given what we know about quantum mechanics. Today they get their wish thanks to the work of Dongshan He and buddies at the Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics in China. The new proof is based on a special set of solutions to a mathematical entity known as the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. At the heart of their thinking is Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle.
Best free video editing software: 9 top programs you should download: 3 more video editing programs we recommend Page 2 of 23 more video editing programs we recommend 6. VirtualDub It looks a little dated now, and only works fully with AVI files, but if that's your format of choice then VirtualDub has plenty to offer. A clean and clear interface helps you navigate through and trim your clips, there are plenty of filters - sharpen, blur, resize, rotate (at any angle, not just 90 degree increments), brightness, colour and contrast tweaks - and optional plugs add even more capabilities. Learning how to use all these functions can take a little while, as you'll need to explore some very lengthy menus to find them. 7. At first glance Free Video Dub looks like just another video trimming tool: step through the source movie, select the left and right points, cut that section from the video and save the results. What's different here, though, is that the program doesn't re-encode your movie, so no matter how much trimming you do, no video quality will be lost. 8. 9.

Part 1 of Episode 1: “The Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living.” Podcast: Play in new window | Download (Duration: 42:11 — 38.6MB) Discussing Plato’s “Apology.” This reading is all about how Socrates is on trial for acting like an ass and proceeds to act like an ass and so is convicted. Big surprise. On this our inaugural discussion, Mark, Seth, and Wes talk about how philosophers are arrogant bastards who neglect their children, how people of all political stripes don’t usually examine their fundamental beliefs (but probably should), why it might be better to know you know nothing than to only think that you know nothing, and how Plato was a super genius all of whose texts you should worship uncritically. Plus: podcaster philosophical origin stories, like when Wes was bitten by a radioactive Anaxagoras. Get the reading and listen to more episodes. Usefull webpages Magenta Ain't A Colour A beam of white light is made up of all the colours in the spectrum. The range extends from red through to violet, with orange, yellow, green and blue in between. But there is one colour that is notable by its absence. You should have seen a green afterimage, but why is this significant? The afterimage always shows the colour that is complementary to the colour of the image. It is a common misconception that red is complementary to green. All the colours in the light spectrum have complements that exist within the spectrum – except green. The light spectrum consists of a range of wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation. When our eyes see colours, they are actually detecting the different wavelengths of the light hitting the retina. If the eye receives light of more than one wavelength, the colour generated in the brain is formed from the sum of the input responses on the retina.
