How in questions The word “HOW” is one of the most productive words in English. It helps us create meaningful questions and sentences. The word “HOW” combines with many other words to create these questions. In this post I try to introduce the basic phrases “How much”, “How many”, “How often”, “How well”, “How long”, “How far” and “How old”. How in questions – mindmap Here the students can practise the basic usage of the word HOW in questions. The way you can create questions with how. In the first game your task is to complete the questions with the correct word. In the second game you should choose the correct answer and shoot only the BAD ducks. How to teach writing: writing lesson ideas | TESOL Does any of this sound familiar? Yes, but writing is boring. Is it? Sure, but writing could be time spent in class doing fun speaking tasks. Who said you can’t do both? But my students get more out of class from interactive activities. Exactly – writing lessons don’t have to conform to any of these assumptions. Firstly, written language is permanent. Secondly, well-delivered writing lessons will include multiple stages that focus on interaction and collaboration. Likewise, asking students to peer correct provides another stage in which students can interact in a meaningful and reflective way. Another common query I hear teachers make is in relation to who should do the writing in a writing lesson. So with this in mind, hopefully you are starting to appreciate that writing lessons need not be isolated, dull experiences, and that when the time is used well, there is plenty of benefit to using class time for written work. But how do you stage a writing lesson? 1) Context 2) Who is the text for?
Speaking aids Probably you agree that these little things make a lot of difference and it is with good reason why people spend time, money and energy to get the right small objects to help them put themselves and their loved ones into the right mood. Why use speaking aids Post-it notes Walls Coloured paper Small objects To control turn-taking As metaphors Conclusion Why use speaking aids In contrast, we often expect that our students have the right mood to speak without having anything that would help them to be in the right mood to speak, or any prompt that would help the flow of ideas. These small prompts or small speaking aids get especially important when children get into the age when they want to speak about themselves more than e.g. about the little animals or fairies in a tale. Post-it notes Post-it notes are great conversation starters. To practise the simple past e.g., get them to write a name, a date and a place that is important to them. Original idea by Karen Sekiguchi
