Sources

English Library - free classic English literature, short stories, poetry library Close Reading Anchor Chart | Ms. Houser For the past few months, I’ve been working with our third grade team on implementing one of the curriculum modules produced by Expeditionary Learning. By the way, if you’re looking for high quality, common core aligned curriculum for grades 3-8, these modules are awesome! We just finished up The Power of Reading and had a ton of success with it. Given that this curriculum is Common Core aligned, close reading played a big role in our work. Throughout the module, we created and used anchor charts for learning and thinking that we wanted to refer back to frequently…and close reading is definitely anchor chart worthy! Because so many of us coaches or teachers are working with close reading in one way or another, I thought it might be helpful to create a downloadable anchor chart to support your work. All of these strategies are tried and true and for sure will support close reading. Thanks for reading,

Classic short stories - 100% FREE How To Read A Book: 3 Strategies For Critical Reading How To Read A Book: 3 Strategies For Critical Reading by Terry Heick If you’re not familiar with Adler and Van Doren’s How To Read A Book, it is worth, well, reading. As you might’ve guessed, these have less to do with decoding, and more to do with comprehension. Actually, more to do with the perspective you approach your reading with. Which is where the following sketch note from comes in. 3 Strategies For Critical Reading For most of us, reading strategies aren’t new, nor is reading through a critical lens. Inspectional Reading: Reading with a focus on grasping the book as a “whole thing”–a kind of “intellectual skimming” even if you do, in fact, read it all Analytical Reading: Reading with a focus on close examination and analysis of the text in and of itself Syntopical Reading: Reading with a focus on the relationships between texts Oh–if you want to use these with anything other than expert readers, give them new names.

Listen A Minute: Easier English Listening and Activities ereadingworksheets | Free Reading Worksheets Reading Skills & Strategies Posters I’ve been wanting to create Reading Skills and Strategies Posters since the beginning of the year. I started a set in September or October, but didn’t have time to complete them at that point in the year. I’m on a kick of trying to improve things this year so I can have more in place next year at the beginning of the year. I created the posters to be reference points for myself and my students throughout the year. I pulled these skills strategies from several sources. Each organizer has the title, a prompt (a question related to skill or strategy) a sample graphic organizer and sentence frames (when applicable) to help students respond to the prompt in a complete sentences. When I teach reading comprehension, I usually provide my students with the vocabulary and sentence structure they need to answer the questions I’m going to ask them about the text. Also included are additional display cards for types of figurative language and genres. These are available in my TpT store.
