Transition Signals in Writing Transition signals are connecting words or phrases that strengthen the internal cohesion of your writing. Transition signals act like bridges between parts of your writing. They link your sentences and paragraphs together smoothly so that they flow and there are no abrupt jumps or breaks between ideas. Transition signals also act like signposts making it easier for the reader to follow your ideas. They help carry over a thought from one sentence to another, from one paragraph to another, or between separate sentences, paragraphs or topics. There are several types of transition signals. 6 Common Mistakes That Stop You Getting Over a Band 6 in Writing Task 2 - IELTS Advantage Quick Links A few weeks ago I launched our new writing correction service and after marking hundreds of essays I noticed that most students make the same mistakes. Below are the 6 most common mistakes and how you can fix them and improve your writing. Forcing Vocabulary Many students try to prepare for IELTS writing by learning long lists of ‘academic’ words and then try to include these words in their essays. It is important to have a wide ranging vocabulary to get one of the higher band scores, but this doesn’t mean you should try and force as many complicated words into your essay as possible. Instead of learning long lists of words, try to read about the common Task 2 topics and note down any new words. Small Grammar Mistakes Most of the candidates I help have a very good grasp of grammar, but everyone makes small mistakes. How many times had she been dragged up it as a child by the wrist, whining and snivelling, always wishing she were somewhere else? Now she had no desire to be anywhere but here. This bustling traffic, these fuming buses, these chipped paving stones and boarded-up shop fronts, they were hers. ‘We lived in an area known as the slums’: life in 1960s Manchester | Art and design I was five when this picture was taken. I’m the girl lying on the ground. The two girls in the light blue dresses are my sisters Kate and Mary, who are twins; my oldest sister Sarah is having her hair combed by her friend Marie. We lived in an area of Manchester known as the slums, but we weren’t really aware of that as children. Every 5 November, we’d have a bonfire; we’d spend months beforehand collecting every bit of wood we could salvage from the houses, or taking bits out of abandoned cars. All the houses in our street backed on to the area in this picture, which we called the croft. We found out about this photo in 1989, when Shirley Baker had a book of her photographs published. After my mum died, my husband wrote to Shirley and asked if we could have a print, and she sent back a lovely letter along with one for each of us. We’ve stayed close, my sisters and I.
