Workshop: considering openness I facilitated a workshop with academic staff at GMIT (Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology) last week in which we considered, mostly through group discussion, openness as educators. Carina Ginty invited me to share some of the ideas from Navigating the Marvellous: openness in education as a prompt for the discussion. The following slidedeck summarises some of the concepts we explored and the activity used to kick off the discussion.
oppia - Tool for creating interactive educational content Oppia is a versatile tool that enables non-technical users to create interactive online educational activities (called 'explorations') that give immediate and personalized feedback to learners. These explorations are incrementally improvable by the community, and embeddable in any webpage. Oppia is free and open source software. It is released under the Apache License 2.0.
Answers Grockit Answers is just-in-time Q&A for video lectures. In Grockit Answers, interactions happen around video lectures, and participants ask and answer questions about specific points in the lecture. Since every question is attached to a specific point in time in the video, Grockit Answers displays a question and its answers at the point in the lecture that they are most relevant. Open course on MOOCs Welcome to the free OpenLearn course on open education. This course runs over seven weeks and is focused around the subject of openness in education. The course is an adapted extract from the Open University Masters-level course H817 Openness and innovation in elearning55 [Tip: hold Ctrl and click a link to open it in a new tab. (Hide tip56)] (of which this is one of four blocks) and open, informal learners. This is the ‘stand alone’ version of the course, so you will be studying it independently of other students.

The OPEN partners recommend TAACCCT grantees invest up-front time finding OER to reuse rather than starting development of new educational resources right away. A significant benefit of OER is that they provide source material to build your development efforts around.
How to Create an Open Online/Blended Course Using Google Retrieved from: I have been challenged to rethink my online and blended course learning design – so I chose to examine what I could do (and any educator could do) in Google. I added “open” because I have yet to figure out all the privacy features with these tools. Often within a district, the lead administrator can set these tools to public or private. Since I am not using Google Apps for education, and just using Google Apps, all of my suggestions are open (This also means that some Google+ Apps can only be used for participants aged 13+)
