Science Fair Central: Students should start a shopping list as soon as they have chosen a topic. Your display can reflect your personality: Is every inch of my locker or bedroom covered with magazine clippings, posters, stickers, and sticky notes? Or am I more of a minimalist? Stand Out from the Crowd Whether they’re the kind of person who loves to design and decorate and dabble with computer graphics, or the one who always opts for the standard black-and-white report cover, this is a time for students to get creative. Students should read the helpful hints for tips on getting started as well as some Do's-and-Dont's.

Make Your Own pH Paper Abstract This is a simple "kitchen chemistry" project about acid/base chemistry. Scientists measure the acidity or alkalinity of a solution using a logarithmic scale called the pH scale. In this project you'll learn about the pH scale, and you'll make your own pH indicator paper using a pH-sensitive dye that you'll extract from red cabbage. You can use your pH paper to measure the acidity/alkalinity of various household solutions. Objective The goal of this project is to make your own pH indicator paper, and use it to measure the acidity and alkanity of various solutions from around your house. Credits Andrew Olson, Ph.D., Science Buddies Share your story with Science Buddies! I Did This Project! Last edit date: 2013-03-04 Introduction In this project you'll learn how to make your own pH paper that you can use to find out if a solution is acidic or basic (alkaline). It all has to do with hydrogen ions (abbreviated with the chemical symbol H+). An acid is a substance that donates hydrogen ions.

Last edit date: 2013-10-15 Introduction A solution is a mixture of a soluble chemical dissolved in water. You might think about an acid as something that an evil villain uses to trap a super hero, but actually some very common household solutions are acids. How do you tell if something is an acid or a base? Red cabbage contains an indicator pigment molecule called flavin, which is one type of molecule called an anthocyanin. Physics Flash Animations We have been increasingly using Flash animations for illustrating Physics content. This page provides access to those animations which may be of general interest. The animations will appear in a separate window. The animations are sorted by category, and the file size of each animation is included in the listing. In addition, I have prepared a small tutorial in using Flash to do Physics animations. LInks to versions of these animations in other languages, other links, and license information appear towards the bottom of this page. The Animations There are 99 animations listed below. Other Languages and Links These animations have been translated into Catalan, Spanish and Basque: En aquest enllaç podeu trobar la versió al català de les animacions Flash de Física. Many animations have been translated into Greek by Vangelis Koltsakis. Most animations have been translated into Hungarian by Sandor Nagy, Eötvös Loránd University.

No Fair Use Videos In Your Moodle Classroom Copyright FascismSource: Want to post videos in your password-protected, walled garden of a Moodle virtual classroom? Well, forget it! That's right, the Association for Information and Media Equipmentis making the following assertion: Copyright law does include exemptions for professors who wish to use audiovisual media “in the course of face-to-face teaching activities of a nonprofit educational institution, in a classroom or similar place devoted to instruction” — so long as the professor is not showing media that he or she knows has been made illegally. As I read this, posting a copyrighted video within a Moodle is NO LONGER ALLOWABLE. What do YOU think?

Meeting Students Where They Are:Using Games to Enhance Student Achievement Robert J. Marzano Games are a regular part of students' lives, no matter what their grade level. Students play games throughout the day on their computers, the Internet, and their cell phones. One of the few places they don't regularly play games is in their classrooms. Over the last five years, I have had the opportunity to examine the influence of academic games in a variety of classes and subject areas. Designing Games for Classroom Use Teachers can adapt a variety of games for academic purposes. To illustrate, a social studies teacher might create Jeopardy questions that involve categories of content such as Rights and Responsibilities, Culture, Economic Systems, Current Events, Geography, and the Judicial System. Getting the Most Out of Games Even though the overall effect of using games in the classroom was strong in the studies we conducted, not all studies demonstrated uniform results. In classrooms showing the greatest gains, teachers did specific things. Endnote 1 Haystead, M.

What Are the Top-10 Ed Tech Priorities for 2010? Policy & Issues What Are the Top-10 Ed Tech Priorities for 2010? Which issues in education technology should drive policymaking in 2010? Start with establishing technology as the "backbone of school improvement," and we'll be on the right track, according to the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), which published a list of its top-10 priorities for decision makers for the coming year. According to ISTE, it released its "Top Ten in '10" list in an effort to provide a framework for policymakers and educators when making decisions about how education funds will be spent--with a particular emphasis on employing technology for school improvement in the context of new and pending federal funding programs tat are demanding education reforms. "No matter what kind of improvement path a state or school district may follow, the use of technology in learning and teaching is essential for real and lasting change," said ISTE CEO Don Knezek in a statement released this week.

The Value Of Games in Education: A Case Study A short while ago I wrote about my first ‘wow’ moment in educational technology. It concerned using a computer to simulate the workings of a concept in Economics known as ‘the multiplier’. It’s not important what that actually is. More to the point is the fact that it was through using a simple computer program that enabled students to get the concept in an instant, simply because the results of their actions could be seen straight away. That wasn’t a game as such, but it’s relevant because, just a few years later, I had my students playing a simulation called Running the British Economy. Utilising both the Treasury model and the latest Treasury statistics, the game involved manipulating a number of economic variables in order to keep the economy on an even keel between inflation on the one hand and high unemployment on the other. Now, the game had value right out of the box. So I instructed the class to go for full employment at all costs.
