Less is the New More: Making the Most of Small Spaces Good Design For Living in Small ApartmentsAs people migrate to smaller spaces, good design helps a lot. This is something they figured out in Europe long ago, that if you don't have a lot of horizontal room you can go vertical. Tumidei in Italy makes some of the nicest stuff, like this unit with lots of storage under the bed. This unit just raises the floor high enough for beds to slide under. This one looks a bit clinical, but has two single beds plus a pull-out double bed in between. When you read in the New York Times that professional couples with children are moving into small one-bedroom apartments in Manhattan and sleeping in closets, perhaps this stuff could be useful. None of this stuff is cheap, nor, as far as I can tell is it available in North America, but there are ideas here that demonstrate how people can share a space and still get a little privacy, a good place to work and a lot of storage in a very small envelope. The Collector’s Loft, Art Gallery and Living Space Combined We really appreciate the originality of this apartment design by UNStudio located in downtown Manhattan, New York. Called “The Collector’s Loft”, this beautiful home combines the elegance of an art gallery with the coziness of a common apartment. The owner wanted a special place for depositing his books and different artifacts he had collected throughout the years, a crib that would offer him the comfort of interacting with art. You can observe the outcome in the photos below but before you do, here is more information on this unusual house from the designers: “Gently flowing curved walls were introduced to virtually divide the main space into proportionally balanced spaces.

Temptation Every so often an email lands in my inbox from perhaps the cruelest man I know. Chris from Welcome Beyond dangles dream designs in front of me and it is all I can do to stop myself from hocking everything I own, jumping a plane and escaping to the hand picked boutique vacation properties that litter the pages of their website. Chris has cruelly tempted me again with a Spanish beauty and oh the temptation! Alemanys 5 ... Its recent restoration integrates old and new, where sober and clean lines look for the enjoyment of essential elements such as space, light, shadow, fire, stone, water or silence."

Wood Slice Walkway Inspiration : katyelliott.com Posted on | March 16, 2009 | 22 Comments One last photo from the Portland Flower Show. I found this walkway so interesting decorated with wood slices. Looks like the slices are just laid into sand. Maybe a cool idea for a house in Maine or just any house in the woods. You might want to use more sand. Readers have suggested using larger slices and choosing rot-resistant wood like Black Locust, Douglas Fir, and or Cedar. I was told the garden path is the work of Landmarcs out of Gorham, Maine. Looking for more garden path inspiration, click here for gravel inspiration and here for gray rocks laid in a sidewalk in Salem, Massachusetts. Update: I spotted another wood slice walkway at the 2011 Boston Flower & Garden show, click here to view photos. IdeaPaint: Turn Your Entire Office Into a Whiteboard Why didn't you think of this? John Goscha, at the ripe old age of 25 ditched a job offer at Goldman Sachs, and instead began marketing IdeaPaint, which is simply a paint that turns any paintable surface into a dry-erase board. The benefit--besides being able to brainstorm on almost every inch of your office--is that the paint is half the cost of whiteboard and better-performing--you can leave marks up indefinitely, and they won't stain the wall. Of course, it takes a bit of time--you may have to sand the wall and prime it--but one other benefit is that you're not incurring all the carbon involved in manufacturing and shipping a whiteboard. [Inc. via Dieline] Turn your cables and extension cords into art instead of hiding them This is the kind of thing you look at in magazines, admire for a second, and then never do… But whatever, it’s still kind of cool. (via XBMC) (via Maisie Broadhead) The first one seems pretty doable. But if you like the last one and want to try it yourself, you’re probably going to have to rewire your light. What do you think… Nifty but impractical idea? (via Unplugged)

Magazine > Digital Interiors: Pixel Furniture | 8-bit is exploding into a living room near you Last month we brought you an article on Japanese designer Kunihiko Morinaga’s pixel-inspired fashion designs, but it seems that the mighty pixel hasn’t limited its sights to the catwalk...they’'re invading your home too. That’s right, MS Paint has come to your living room. These 8-bit inspired furniture designs are the brain-child of Barcelona born London-based designer Cristian Zuzunaga. A graduate of London’s Royal College of Art, Cristian originally began exploring how natural and urban landscapes can be broken down to create unique discharges of colour on a canvas. Now, we don’t know what landscape he pixellated to come up with these cushion designs, but gosh aren’t they lovely? Slightly more ambitious is this square-bodied armchair (the pattern of which looks not dissimilar to Roger Hargreaves’s Mr Men no?) What about a pixellated bin to mess with your sense of reality? Finally, ever thought of sculpting your own piece of pixel interior design?
