The New Heroes . What is Social Entrepreneurship? Photo: Mitch Wilson A social entrepreneur identifies and solves social problems on a large scale. Just as business entrepreneurs create and transform whole industries, social entrepreneurs act as the change agents for society, seizing opportunities others miss in order to improve systems, invent and disseminate new approaches and advance sustainable solutions that create social value. Unlike traditional business entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs primarily seek to generate "social value" rather than profits. And unlike the majority of non-profit organizations, their work is targeted not only towards immediate, small-scale effects, but sweeping, long-term change. "Social entrepreneurs identify resources where people only see problems.

A Look Inside Pipa, Brazil’s First Start-Up Incubator --This post is co-written by Dhaval Chadha, a founding partner at Cria, an innovation consultancy and corporate venture incubator, and one of the cofounders of Pipa. Pipa (Portuguese for “kite”) is an incubator, or to be more specific an accelerator, focused on supporting entrepreneurs looking to create long-term sustainable value through business. We aim to support these entrepreneurs in their quest to create positive social, environmental and financial impact, something Brazil is engaging with more and more. While we strongly believe current paradigms of business and capitalism are losing relevance in the context of rising populations, inequality, environmental degradation and exponentially advancing technology, we also believe that business is one of the best forms of creating lasting social impact.

How Social Entrepreneurs Who Need Money Can Get Noticed “Do good” business owners seeking funding should target investors looking to put their money to work to make positive social or environmental change. But how to get on their radar? One new way to make your company known to these "social investors" is through a new online searchable database for social entrepreneurs. It's called GIIRS, short for Global Impact Investing Rating System. It analyzes a company’s social and environmental performance and rates it against peers. Funding Opportunities - Duke University Institutionally Limited Opportunities Some grant and fellowship programs limit the number of proposals that may be submitted by an institution. If you submit a proposal to such a program and Duke's limit is exceeded, your proposal, and other proposal(s) submitted from Duke, will very likely be rejected without review. To prevent this, ORS coordinates the internal review process. Social entrepreneurship Social entrepreneurship is the process of pursuing innovative solutions to social problems. More specifically, social entrepreneurs adopt a mission to create and sustain social value. They pursue opportunities to serve this mission, while continuously adapting and learning. They draw upon appropriate thinking in both the business and nonprofit worlds and operate in all kinds of organizations: large and small; new and old; religious and secular; nonprofit, for-profit, and hybrid.[1] Business entrepreneurs typically measure performance in profit and return, but social entrepreneurs also take into account a positive return to society. Social entrepreneurship typically furthers broad social, cultural, and environmental goals and is commonly associated with the voluntary and not-for-profit sectors.[2] Profit can at times also be a consideration for certain companies or other enterprises.
