Just last year, the Association of American Publishers ranked Children's/Young Adult books as the single fastest-growing publishing category. Which is why we were only a little surprised to see the tremendous response that came in for this summer's Best-Ever Teen Fiction poll. A whopping 75,220 of you voted for your favorite young adult novels, blasting past the total for last year's science fiction and fantasy poll at, dare we say it, warp speed. And now, the final results are in. Selecting a manageable voting roster from among the more than 1,200 nominations that came in from readers wasn't easy, and we were happy to be able to rely on such an experienced panel of judges. Summer, like youth, is fleeting.
Common Core Online Concept Cartoons These concept cartoons were developed by Dianne Anderson and Kathleen Fisher (2002) as prompts for eliciting discussion about ideas in evolution. They can also be used as assessment tools. The cartoons are best suited for college non-majors and pre-college classes. The incorrect statements in the cartoons are derived from common naive conceptions. These cartoons represent a sampling of those we have created. (The Mission Impossible theme song that comes on the CD with the book, Eight Great Ideas, is forty-nine seconds long and works really well for this.) There are several advantages to using a song. Advantage 1: The Certainty Principle Without a consistent cue, students are on their own in determining when to pack up. However, by playing a song to indicate, "It's now time to pack up," the teacher replaces the uncertainty with a predictable and student-friendly cue. Advantage 2: An Accountability Check The song will be a clear, unmistakeable cue to begin the pack up procedure. In other words... Teacher With a smile: Don't even think about packing up until you hear our song. Or something to that effect. Advantage 3: The Fun Factor Music is a more enjoyable cue than the teacher's already over-used voice. Putting It All Together
