Strawberry Basil Lemonade

Strawberry Basil Lemonade
This Strawberry Basil Lemonade is coming to ya from the archives but I’ve given it a bit of a face lift. Strawberry Basil Lemonade was basically the first drink recipe I ever post on WGC and it’s been my most requested drink ever since. It’s a refreshing blend of homemade lemonade that gets fresh strawberries and basil pureed into the mixture. Depending on who’s enjoying this with me, I’ll add a glug or two of gin or just leave it “virgin” and enjoy it over some ice. Either way, it’s the best drink out there and you should probably be drinking this come Monday by the pool working on your tan. At least that’s what I’ll be doing poolside, in Tucson, with my besties. And while this doesn’t directly figure into book tour, I’ve also managed to schedule just about every single meal while I’m in Tucson so I can hit up my favorite places to stuff my face while I’m there. So in the meantime, grab some lemons, strawberries and a handful of fresh basil and let’s make some cocktails or mocktails!

Thin Crust Pizza Successfully making thin crust pizza at home is not an easy task. When I have tried before I end up with a crust that over cooked and cracker like, or one that is limp and under cooked. That is why I was so happy to see that Cook’s Illustrated had done some testing and made some discoveries. Their big finding was that it is better to use all-purpose flour than bread flour or other high protein flours. The bread flour retains less water than lower protein all-purpose. The other great suggestion from Cook’s Illustrated is rolling out the dough, and covering it with plastic wrap. You will end up a dough that has more flavor and is easier to work with if you let it rise overnight. Great Southern Spirit: Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka | Thirsty South There is no drink more Southern than sweet tea. Not bourbon. Not Tennessee whiskey. Jim Irvin and Scott Newitt at Firefly Distillery on Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina, struck Southern gold when they came up with their sweet tea vodka in 2008. Whether you drink it straight in a tall glass filled with ice, or in a “John Daly” (one of the best cocktail names ever in our opinion – basically an Arnold Palmer plus vodka!) The John Daly 1 part Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka 1 part lemonade (we like the Simply Lemonade brand) Pour over ice in a tall glass, garnish with a slice of lemon and/or a sprig of mint. While you’re here, be sure to check out our visit to Firefly Distillery on Wadmalaw Island.

Apple Pie Egg Rolls : : Miss in the Kitchen Apple Pie Egg Rolls I saw one of the Food Network stars making apple chimichangas and thought I had to have some for myself. I bought flour tortillas and apples, and then I used the flour tortillas for tacos. Still wanting some kind of fried apple pie dessert I used the egg roll wrappers I had in place of the flour tortillas. UPDATE: I did an interview with the Casper Star-Tribune newspaper and they made a video of me making these Apple Pie Egg Rolls! Apple Pie Egg Rolls Ingredients: 1 tablespoon butter 3 cups apples, peeled, cored, and diced 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 5 egg roll wrappers vegetable oil for frying for garnish: 1 tablespoon sugar mixed with 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon Cooking Directions: In a medium size pan, melt butter, add apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Place about 2 tablespoons of apple filling into each egg roll wrapper, wet edges of wrapper with water, roll up sealing edges. Serve with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce, it’s good! Enjoy! Miss

Jelly Shots - Mimosa Mimosa Jelly Shots, cut with an oval cookie cutter and skewered with edible flower petals The fourth submission for the End of Summer Cocktail survey is a no brainer. It is so obvious in fact, that I can't believe this cocktail didn't make it into the upcoming Jelly Shot Test Kitchen Recipe book. Mimosa breaks two of my cardinal jelly shot rules: 1) don't gild the lily, and 2) strain to remove solids. And speaking of juice, fresh squeezed is specified in the recipe - it really does make a difference. Mimosa Jelly ShotI ascribe to Ina Garten's garnishing philosophy- garnish according to the actual flavorings used in preparation of the item. Recommended Pan: 9x9 cake pan 1 1/2 cups fresh squeezed orange juice1 tbsp sugar3 envelopes Knox gelatin1 1/2 cups champagne1 drop orange flower water, if desiredEdible flower petals for garnish, if desired Pour juice and sugar into a small saucepan and sprinkle with the gelatin. To serve, cut into desired shapes. Makes 24 to 32 jelly shots.

Pumpkin White Hot Chocolate Pumpkin Spice White Hot Chocolate Drinks, Fall Recipes, Seasonal Recipes, Winter Recipes | 61 comments I’ve had this idea for a Pumpkin Hot Chocolate brewing in my head for a while. I don’t drink coffee, so I’m a little jealous when I see people talking about Pumpkin Spice Latte’s and the like from Starbucks. Doesn’t that look good? I’m not sure why I decided on white chocolate, because I do like chocolate and pumpkin together (like in this Chocolate Pumpkin Cupcake Recipe), but white chocolate just sounded right for some reason. Check out this picture! This would be a fun treat after a night out trick-or-treating if you’re not already on a sugar high. Oreo Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies Alright, confession time. My first impression of these cookies was not a super positive one. I mean, don’t get me wrong…I love a good chocolate chip cookie. And Oreos easily top the list among my favorite “store bought” cookies. The idea of combining them just threw me. I am really not even sure how to describe these. Oreo Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe from the fantabulous Jenny of Picky Palate 2 sticks (1 cup) softened butter 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar 1 cup granulated sugar 2 large eggs 1 tablespoon pure vanilla 3 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 10 oz bag chocolate chips 1 pkg. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a separate bowl mix the flour, salt and baking soda. NOTE: Some bakers have had some trouble with their dough spreading too much during baking. Makes about 2 dozen VERY LARGE cookies. stumble

Butterbeer I also have a Frozen Butterbeer recipe! Check it out! 🙂 As I continue my little celebration of the release of Harry potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 1, today I get to share with you my favorite treat that I have ever, ever made: butterbeer! It seems to be the Harry Potter food that most people want to try more than any other! I was lucky enough to go to WWOHP back in June. It. was. amazing. As for the butterbeer…well, I have to admit that it was definitely on the top of my list of things to do there! It was so delicious! There are several homemade butterbeer recipes that have popped up online since the opening of WWOHP, but I have to admit, I haven’t tried any of them. I started with the butterbeer itself. I considered butterscotch syrup, but ruled it our for two reasons: 1. 2. What else could give me that buttery flavor, but butter? Now, all I had to worry about was the “foam.” This has been, by far, the most fun, the most exciting thing that I have made. Ingredients Recipe by Darla

Sure we have a couple favorites around here, like Pumpkin Spice White Hot Chocolate from last winter. This Spiced Pomegranate Apple Cider really fit the bill. Now that it is feeling a bit more like winter around here, I am craving warm things to drink. More Winter Drinks for Sipping: What are your favorite winter drinks?
