Strawberry Margarita Jell-O Shots

Strawberry Margarita Jell-O Shots
When thinking of Super Bowl foods strawberries don't usually make the cut. However... mix the strawberries with a little tequila and turn them into a margarita and you are getting closer! With our sunny Citrus Blush already mixed and in the pitcher we weren't really in need of another cocktail, but when I came across these cute little shots I couldn't resist putting them on my Super Bowl Extravaganza Table. Hollowed out strawberries work as a vehicle for a Jell-0 concoction of strawberry gelatin, tequila and a touch of Grand Marnier. Garnished with cute little wedges of lime these little shots are absolutely adorable! Strawberry season here in San Diego is a tad behind schedule and I had a bit of trouble finding those beautiful, plump and bright red berries, but we made do with the Farmer's Market offerings and found some that were good enough. The gelatin is mixed with water, 4 oz of tequila and 2 oz of Grand Marnier.

Beef with Snow Peas This is not a Thanksgiving recipe. I repeat: This is not a Thanksgiving recipe. You’ve probably already figured that out by now. I was cooking my Thanksgiving recipes yesterday–chopping and rinsing and brining–and out of the blue, I knew. I knew. It came to me in a vision. I have long since stopped trying to ignore visions of words written on bright white walls. What about you guys? Oh. Never mind. Let’s just make the beef with snow peas and forget this ever happened…okay? My favorite meat for stir fry is flank steak, because it remains so, so tender when you slice it very thin. Look at that beautiful, beautiful beef. Yes, I’m married to a cattle rancher. Grab some soy sauce. Some sherry…(either cooking or regular sherry is fine.) Brown sugar. Some minced fresh ginger. Sometimes I slice the peel off of ginger, take a big whiff, and can’t believe what I’ve just experienced. Rosemary Cilantro Lemongrass I close my eyes and want to die from bliss when these scents enter my world. And the ginger.

The Best Burger Recipe Ever with Secret Sauce: little miss momma Seriously, this is the best burger recipe ever–it’s a Ben favorite. I am kinda a stickler when it comes to homemade burgers. I can’t stand the dryness of pre-constructed or frozen patties, or when the patty turns into a giant dome that I can hardly bite into–and my burger muuust have cheese. So last year I set about creating the perfect burger, and you know what? I don’t even make it on the grill. Burger Ingredients: 2 lbs ground beef 85/15 sesame seed buns 1/2 cup of grated Monterrey jack cheese 1/4 cup BBQ sauce season salt to taste cracked black pepper onion powder We usually like to buy extra lean ground beef around these parts, but when it comes to a juicy burger, you’ve gotta make an exception. Combine the ground beef, grated cheese, bbq sauce, and seasonings. I cook the patties on this really cool skillet that has grill lines. Reduce heat to medium and allow this side of the patty to cook for about 4-6 minutes, but make sure it doesn’t burn. click here for more yummy recipes Burger

Plain Chicken A few weeks ago we ventured out for our traditional Saturday lunch. We decided to go to Another Broken Egg in Mountain Brook. We had eaten breakfast there once before and wanted to give the lunch items a try. I went all out on this quiche and even made the crust. Caramel Apple Jello Shots [With Real Apples] Can you believe I actually spend time trying to figure out what kinds of food could be used as a vessel for jello shots? I'm not a lush I swear ... although my blog would have you totally fooled. It's just that, after filling lemons, limes, oranges and strawberries with vodka infused jello, I knew there had to be something else ... So we tried apples... and guess what? YUM. (If you wanted something with a little bit more alcohol content you could always try them out with Van Gogh Dutch Caramel Vodka instead of butterscotch schnapps) Or for a kid friendly, non-alcoholic version just use cold water mixed with two tablespoons of caramel syrup instead of butterscotch schnapps or vodka! 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Birthday Cake Jello Shots About a month ago, my Chocolate Covered Strawberry Shot Glasses were featured on reddit.com, spiking the number of visits to my blog that day, and also gaining some very interesting comments. This one particularly stood out: “I love how this blog is mostly gorgeous baked goods – but every now and then she makes variations of shots – I’m picturing a young Martha Stewart who is periodically DRUNK OUT OF HER SKULL with fruit on her face”. I’m here today to tell you that my skull is fully intact and while I do enjoy the indulgence of alcohol every now and then, I at least have the decency to clean my face :) But seriously, I do like to have fun incorporating alcohol into my desserts for special occasions with friends, especially for a birthday party! This time around it was my friend Alyssa’s 24th and I didn’t want to let her down after last year’s Caramel Frappacino Cupcakes… Print Recipe Save Recipe Birthday Cake Jello Shots Yield: 30 small jello shots Ingredients: Directions:

The Ultimate In-N-Out Secret Menu (and Super Secret Menu!) Survival Guide SLIDESHOW: The Ultimate In-N-Out Secret Menu (and Super Secret Menu!) Survival Guide [Photographs: J. Kenji Lopez-Alt] I'm no stranger to In-N-Out, the massively popular California-based fast food burger chain (that is apparently poised to expand East, if only a couple states closer to me—hooray!). And of course, I've been aware of their secret menu for years. The Location: the In-N-Out near Sausalito, just out of San Francisco. The Time: Sunday afternoon, 3 p.m.The Mission: Order and document every single item and option on the menu, public, secret, super-duper-secret. Anybody who's been halfway around the block is aware of In-N-Out's secret menu, which allows you a few custom options other than the regular hamburger, cheeseburger, fries, shakes, and Double-Double that appear on their printed menus. Before I ever set foot in the store, I culled the Internet, eventually stumbling upon the Davis County Wiki, which has a full user-generated page devoted entirely to In-N-Out menu options.

Homemade Calzone I wanted to make something to take on the road, but the contents of the refrigerator were saying PIZZA. Hmmm... pizza is not so portable. Then I remembered CALZONE! Calzone is basically the same as pizza but with a much prettier appearance. Roll pizza dough into a rectangle the length of your baking sheet. Put sauce on the center half of the dough. Just like pizza, add your toppings (our favorites are pepperoni, olives, and mushrooms). Then add cheese. Now comes the special part. This is what it looks like when all the cuts are made. Then "wrap the baby." Here is the calzone ready to bake. Uh oh... don't do what I did. For the second one, I remembered to start with my rectangle of dough ON a baking sheet. By the way, the same dough wrapping technique can be used for sweet fillings too.

Unfettered F-U-N . . . Rainbow Jelly Shooter! Rainbow Jelly Shooter Its been a whirlwind at the test kitchen. The book is progressing (crossing fingers that it is going to press in early December!), we have been working on a little something (three little somethings, actually) for Saveur.com, and about a million more actions items cropping up here and there, many of which have not received appropriate attention and are currently housed in a bin marked "anxiety provoking". One of the highlights of our week was a lovely chat with Erin over at Tablespoon.com, who mentioned that they were hosting a Double Rainbow Week, which sounded like such fun! (And it IS - featured items include double rainbow . . . donuts! So, when the weekend rolled around, rather than trolling cocktail books for jelly shot inspiration, we decided it was high time for a bit of unfettered f-u-n . . . I love the "rainbow" gelatin technique - borrowed from the popular recipe for kids' finger gelatin. Cheers, Michelle Rainbow Jelly Shooter Yield: about 45 jelly shots

Spicy Chicken Mexican Lasagna No, I'm not trendy... at least, when it comes to diets. Having been gluten free now for over a month after finding out about my gluten intolerance/sensitivity, I'm learning how some folks are quick to judge my reasons for gluten free living is more of a trend than an actual need. And along with these judgements comes the idea that gluten free living is a life of boring food. Wrong! Take for example this Spicy Chicken Mexican Lasagna. If you prefer not to have that spicy kick from the chipotle peppers, fee free to omit them! Spicy Chicken Mexican Lasagna Lasagna: 12 (6-inch) soft corn tortillas vegetable oil spray 1/3 cup minced fresh cilantro + more for garnish 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice salt & pepper to taste 1 1/2 cup shredded Colby Jack cheese (6oz) sour cream for serving In a large skillet over medium high heat, add the vegetable oil. Add the shredded chicken and spices, tossing to coat. Meanwhile, adjust the oven rack to the middle position and preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

potato pancakes, even better Note: Every 15 years, I get to rewrite and overhaul an old post, just because I’m tired of looking at it. It’s true! It’s right there in the bylaws, trust me. Don’t fret: The way I make latkes hasn’t changed. But this post was aggressively overdue for some fresh photos and a bit of crisping up, and just in time for Hanukkah. Everyone makes latkes, fried potato pancakes that are the star of the traditional Ashkenazi Hanukkah celebration, a little differently. Watch me make these latkes on YouTube! Here are my unwavering latke principles: Russet or Idaho potatoes only: The best latkes are made with starchy baking potatoes, which give us textured edges and as much lightness as you can get from a knot of potatoes enrobed in batter and fried in oil. Coarsely grated: For warp speed and an appreciation of intact knuckles, I like to grate my potatoes in a food processor. Well-seasoned: Salt and pepper, please. Go ahead; make them in advance: Latkes reheat fantastically. Video Previously

Cake Batter Martinis This has my name alllll over it. I know I just shared a big, fuzzy drink with you yesterday but before you go voting me off the island, hear me out. I.couldn’t.help.it. I teased you about it last week and couldn’t wait another day to share! So here’s the deal. This obviously doesn’t fit that bill… but can you blame me? I have no issue running to the grocery store and spending major bucks to create a recipe to tell you about… however, I just can’t justify dropping a benny at the liquor store for one outlandish drink that I may sip once a year. [And really, while we're in the circle of trust here I will tell you that I searched high and low (read: 5 different liquor stores) for this cake-flavored vodka. I highly suggest buying the whipped cream vodka because, um… well hello? K. I’ll be honest: I didn’t have high expectations for this drink. Cake Batter Martinis adapted from grin and bake it makes a single serving, is easily multiplied 1 ounce amaretto 1 1/2 ounces Pinnacle whipped cream vodka
