U.S. Life Cycle Inventory Database - Life Cycle Assessments A project in the Netherlands included an LCA for a man's shirt. The retailer who participated in this project was interested in developing an environmentally friendly range of shirts. The main questions asked were: Which phase in a shirt's life cycle produces the most pollution? The environmental impacts of the shirts occurred during four phases: Production (cotton growing, spinning and weaving, dyeing and finishing) Transportation Use (washing, drying, and ironing)Disposal (reuse, recycling, composting, and incinerating). The results showed that most of the environmental impact occurs during transportation to the retail outlet and during the use phase. Environmental Benefits Reduction in energy use 10% Reduction in detergent use >20% Economic Benefits Consumers reduce energy costs by 10% and detergent costs by 20%. DTIE SCP Branch: Safer Production Sustainable consumption and production (SCP) is about promoting resource and energy efficiency, sustainable infrastructure, and providing access to basic services, green and decent jobs and a better quality of life for all. The implementation of SCP as an integrated approach helps to achieve overall development plans, reduce future economic, environmental and social costs, strengthen economic competitiveness and reduce poverty. Sustainable consumption and production is defined as “the use of services and related products, which respond to basic needs and bring a better quality of life while minimising the use of natural resources and toxic materials as well as the emissions of waste and pollutants over the life cycle of the service or product so as not to jeopardise the needs of future generations.” Norwegian Ministry of Environment, Oslo Symposium, 1994. Sustainable consumption has been recognized as an integral element of sustainable development and an issue of paramount importance.
- European reference Life-Cycle Database (ELCD 3.0) Since its first release in 2006, the ELCD (European reference Life Cycle Database) comprises Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data from front-running EU-level business associations and other sources for key materials, energy carriers, transport, and waste management. The respective data sets are officially provided and approved by the named industry association. Focus of the new release of ELCD is laid on data quality, consistency, and applicability. The ILCD Entry-Level requirements review has been established to provide to the user useful information on data quality, guarantee minimum extent of documentation and methodological consistency among datasets. Information on datasets quality and about the ILCD Entry-Level review has been added to the reviewed datasets and can be found in the documentation under the 'Validation section'. The ELCD is being published using a newly developed IT infrastructure ready to be registered as the 'JRC ELCD node' to the Life Cycle Data Network.

The Boustead Model What is the Boustead Model? The Boustead Model is a computer modelling tool for lifecycle inventory calculations. There are three main groups of files: the program files, the core data files, and the top data files as shown in Figure 4. Figure 4. The program files are those which allow you to interact with the model. The top data files are those created by you and contain the information for unit operations that you create. 1. The core data files contain information on a range of different fuel production and materials processing operations. a. Unit operations Because of the manner in which The Boustead Model has evolved over the last twenty years, it is both extremely simple to operate and a remarkably powerful tool, capable of analysing highly complex systems without resorting to approximations or simplifications which may otherwise introduce inaccuracies (especially when dealing with non-linear systems). After its conception in the ’90s, the standardization process that followed and that has recently given rise to several spin off (e.g. carbon footprint, water footprint, eco-efficiency and others already on the agenda), there is a urgent need to harmonise several methodological developments and conventions that have occurred.
