The Integrated Product Policy (COM (2003)302) identified Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as the “best framework for assessing the potential environmental impacts of products”. It highlighted the necessity for a Platform on LCA and to increase the availability of quality-assured life-cycle data. The JRC responded to these needs by establishing the European Platform on Life Cycle Assessment (EPLCA), through which it has facilitated the development of the European reference Life Cycle Database (ELCD), the International reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD) Handbook, and the Life Cycle Data Network (LCDN). The European Platform on LCA is a project of the European Commission, carried out by the Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) in collaboration with DG Environment Directorate Green Economy. Our thinking: Life Cycle Approach

The retailer who participated in this project was interested in developing an environmentally friendly range of shirts. The main questions asked were: Which phase in a shirt's life cycle produces the most pollution? Are natural or synthetic fibers environmentally preferable?

DTIE SCP Branch: Safer Production Sustainable consumption and production (SCP) is about promoting resource and energy efficiency, sustainable infrastructure, and providing access to basic services, green and decent jobs and a better quality of life for all. The implementation of SCP as an integrated approach helps to achieve overall development plans, reduce future economic, environmental and social costs, strengthen economic competitiveness and reduce poverty. Sustainable consumption and production is defined as “the use of services and related products, which respond to basic needs and bring a better quality of life while minimising the use of natural resources and toxic materials as well as the emissions of waste and pollutants over the life cycle of the service or product so as not to jeopardise the needs of future generations.”

- European reference Life-Cycle Database (ELCD 3.0) Since its first release in 2006, the ELCD (European reference Life Cycle Database) comprises Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data from front-running EU-level business associations and other sources for key materials, energy carriers, transport, and waste management. The respective data sets are officially provided and approved by the named industry association. Focus of the new release of ELCD is laid on data quality, consistency, and applicability. Many ELCD 3.0 datasets have been reviewed against the ILCD entry-level data quality requirements in order to provide quality-assured LCI data. 36 ILCD entry-Level compliant datasets can currently be found in the ELCD 3.0. Complete Sun and Moon Data for One Day Use these forms to obtain rise, set, and transit times for the Sun and Moon; civil twilight beginning and end times; and, lunar phase information. First, specify the date and location in one of the two forms below. Then, click the "Get data" button at the end of the form. Use Form A for cities or towns in the U.S. or its territories. Use Form B for all other locations.

The Boustead Model What is the Boustead Model? The Boustead Model is a computer modelling tool for lifecycle inventory calculations. There are three main groups of files: the program files, the core data files, and the top data files as shown in Figure 4. Figure 4. Home - Klimatdeklaration Content of a Climate Declaration A Climate Declaration describes the emissions of greenhouse gases, expressed as carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalents for a product's life cycle. It is based on verified results from life cycle assessment (LCA) based information in accordance with ISO 14025. Single issue EPD®s shall give information on how to obtain information on the full environmental impact from the declared product. Single issue EPDs shall also include the following statement: “This single issue EPD® only addresses one impact category and does not assess other potential social, economic and environmental impacts arising from the provision of this product.”

LCA Rome 2013 SETAC Europe is pleased to announce the 19th SETAC LCA Case Study Symposium, which will be held 11-13 November 2013 in Rome, Italy. The theme of the symposium, jointly organised by SETAC and ISIE, is: Mirroring the SETAC tripartite structure, the purpose of the symposium is to discuss how LCA can support the decision making process at all levels, i.e. industry and policy contexts, and how LCA results can be efficiently communicated and be used for supporting market strategies . Eco Indicator Eco-Indicator 99 is a life cycle impact assessment tool developed by PRé Consultants B.V. Eco-Indicator 99 helps designers to make an environmental assessment of a product by calculating eco-indicator scores for materials and processes used. The resulting scores provide an indication of areas for product improvements. The Eco-Indicator is split into three sections: FEBE ECOLOGIC: LCA consulting, Carbon Footprint and GaBi LCA software FEBE ECOLOGIC supports organizations to strengthen and valorize their product and corporate sustainability thanks to experienced consulting and training services, and powerful software solutions. By the quantification of life cycle impacts related to products and technologies FEBE ECOLOGIC helps to assess, manage, improve and communicate environmental and climate performance. Our partner organizations intend to define innovative sustainability strategies and look for new possibilities to differentiate themselves and to identify new improvement scenarios.

Towards a "World Intellectual Wealth Organisation" Towards a Supporting the Geneva Declaration The Geneva Declaration is an impressive step towards the creation of a broad coalition of people, organisations and countries1 demanding that the international community re-think the goals and mechanisms for awarding monopoly control over different kinds of knowledge. It offers many constructive, concrete suggestions for changes in WIPO goals, policies and priorities, and provides ample and insightful arguments for redesign of the copyright and patent bargains to better serve the public interest of all of humankind. We are convinced that new answers sometimes require new questions, not more careful repetition of old questions.

Interview with Renée Morin, President of the US office Interview with Joao Fontes, Sustainability Consultant Interview with Margreet Riedstra, HR Manager Eco Smes - Description of the course This course gives an introduction to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) concepts, a basic level of understanding on how to carry out a basic LCA and an understanding of the implied uncertainties, value-choices and trade-offs. The course aims at giving practical guidance on how to interpret LCA results. Also, an understanding of the benefits of using "standards" should be achieved. The standards for LCA are the ISO 14040-14043 standards and the technical specification ISO/TS 14048. This course is recommended for product designers , purchasers and environmental strategists - who want to have an introduction to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The course has been produced in the context of the EU-project CASCADE .
