Crooked Timber — Out of the crooked timber of humanity, no straight thing was ever made How the GOP Became the Party of the Rich | Politics News The nation is still recovering from a crushing recession that sent unemployment hovering above nine percent for two straight years. The president, mindful of soaring deficits, is pushing bold action to shore up the nation's balance sheet. Cloaking himself in the language of class warfare, he calls on a hostile Congress to end wasteful tax breaks for the rich. "We're going to close the unproductive tax loopholes that allow some of the truly wealthy to avoid paying their fair share," he thunders to a crowd in Georgia. Preacherlike, the president draws the crowd into a call-and-response. The crowd, sounding every bit like the protesters from Occupy Wall Street, roars back: "MORE!" The year was 1985. Today's Republican Party may revere Reagan as the patron saint of low taxation. Modern-day Republicans have become, quite simply, the Party of the One Percent – the Party of the Rich. The GOP campaign to aid the wealthy has left America unable to raise the money needed to pay its bills.

Harry Ransom Center Totalitarian Democracy Those of us who have wondered how fascism would come, if and when it came, did not sufficiently credit the possibility that it would arrive through the process of law and "freely chosen" representatives of the people. We were too much given to dramatic, filmic versions of the occasion, influenced perhaps by images of "body snatchers" from another galaxy, or aliens as they were depicted in "Independence Day." There is often the exogamous tendency to imagine that catastrophe must come from beyond our shores, whether defined geographically, culturally or psychologically. It is always "them," not "us," that is the source of our disaster. Even when the foreign intrusion took a mortal form, we were more likely to view our antagonists in ways that denied their actual humanity. Everything depends on what we mean by the term "valid." So it is that the Constitution is preceded by a preamble that sets out the purpose of the ensuing document and claims that its ultimate intention is to: {*style:<i>

Social Science Research Network (SSRN) Home Page Inverted Totalitarianism and the Corporate State Progressive author and pundit, Chris Hedges adds his vantage point in the video, Inverted Totalitarianism: Brand Obama and the Corporate State. Hedges’ talent for ripping apart the corporate state in all its horror is well established. However, his clarion voice goes unheard in the corridors of real power. Blaming external forces for all the ills of circumstances begs the issue. The frightful consequences on the totalitarian society rest upon the shoulders of each person who refuses to challenge the system. A disconnect of left leaning progressives, from the historic context of natural law principles, is a core reason why a coalition of anti establishment advocates fails. The economic implosion of the last few years is undeniable.

10 Zen Monkeys The Soul Suckers of Endless Compromise Every four years this happens to me again. My phone stops ringing, my emails aren’t returned, my liberal friends avert their gaze if we chance upon the same aisle at Safeway. Was it something I said? Did I hog the mushroom dip and the Cote du Rhone at their last soire? Have I not been flossing? Now, I am no Republican, and certainly not a centrist “Independent,” a euphemism for “I have no opinions—I am just here to shop.” But I have no patience for my liberal friends’ insistence on robotic support for Obama, or even for my progressive friends’ qualms about whether to remove their Obama bumper stickers. Start with torture, kind of an important subject, at least in days past. Meet the New Boss. At home, the “Justice” Department (evidently named by a staff comedy writer) has pursued a strict policy of blocking prosecutions of Bush-era torturers or architects of torture, and denying victims a chance for a day in court. Not even private contractors had to worry. Let Them Eat Maple Syrup
