New York Man Sues Gap Over Lower East Side Logo The Gap Inc. has unwittingly stepped right in the middle of a Lower East Side turf war. And if history has anything to teach the company, it may have met its match in a Clinton Street underdog with a knack for printing coveted T-shirts. Local clothing designer Robert Lopez sued the Gap in Manhattan Federal Court Wednesday after finding out that Old Navy, one of its subsidiaries, has been selling a T-shirt with a nearly identical logo to one of his. In court papers, Lopez says he's been marketing garments emblazoned with "Lower East Side" and "LES NYC" since 1999, and registered his trademark with the state in 2007. The Gap Goliath would be wise to take heed of this DIY David. Lopez said that he could not reveal the settlements from the previous cases. The indie T-shirt designer said that when he started out in the 1990s he wanted his logo to bring recognition to the neighborhood, which had not yet gentrified to the extent it has today.

Scenes from an Atrocity: Videos in War I first heard about the Syrian rebel who was supposed to have eaten a heart on Monday, when a friend who lives in Beirut tweeted something cryptic about abuse videos. Against my better instincts, I opened one of the links he attached to his tweet. It showed soldiers (or was it militia members? Rebels? It can be hard to tell in Syria) beating prisoners, whipping them with ropes. Such videos have increasingly come to represent a new weapon in modern wars-by-terror. It’s sobering to acknowledge that, for a previous generation of television viewers—not so long ago—the most terrifying thing they had ever seen (and for many it induced enduring fears) was the shower scene in “Psycho.” Once, some years ago in Iraq, where I was spending long periods of time reporting, I decided I had to look at one of these videos. The video began with the hapless Turk seated facing the camera, expressionlessly kneeling in front of men who wielded guns and swords and wore black executioner’s masks.

Myth-busting the Christmas adverts Welcome to the world of Christmas adverts, where it's always snowing, the turkey's never overcooked, and the trees never shed their needles. Every year, some of Britain's biggest retailers turn TV commercial breaks into a winter wonderland. We all know it's a long way from reality, but it still looks like a nice place to visit - so just how far away is it? It always snows Picture the scene. Snowflakes flutter gently from a pale sky on to a glistening winterscape below, where woollen-clad, rosy-cheeked children build a perfectly rounded snowman. This is the wondrous scene depicted in many a Christmas advert - and this year is no different. But how realistic is a white Christmas day? Not very. BBC weather producer Sara Thornton says it is too early to say if we will see snow this Christmas: "In some parts of the UK, you are statistically more likely to see a white Good Friday than a white Christmas day. Mums do everything Sexist? "It's a missed opportunity if it's just left to one person.
