Meditate From Wired How-To Wiki Photo by Renee Barron/Flickr/CC Meditation isn't just something for yogis or crystal-collecting New Age fanatics. Meditation is a scientifically demonstrated method of lowering stress levels and helping your body and mind relax. This article is part of a wiki anyone can edit. Getting started There are many different kinds of meditation, but nearly all of them share a common goal -- focusing and quieting your mind. Although it may seem like you're just sitting there doing nothing, it turns out that sitting and doing nothing is actually very difficult -- especially when you first get started. Tips for beginners Start small. Find a comfortable chair that you can sit up straight in with your feet flat on the floor. There's no "best time" to meditate, though being very hungry or very full can be distracting, so avoid both of those times. Meditation is a great way to escape the stress of the workday. Your mind will wander, probably immediately. The wandering mind Apps

Meditation Secrets Revealed Be Still. | zen habits By Leo Babauta Be still. Just for a moment. Listen to the world around you. Feel your breath coming in and going out. Be at peace with being still. In this modern world, activity and movement are the default modes, if not with our bodies then at least with our minds, with our attention. We are always on, always connected, always thinking, always talking. This comes at a cost: we lose that time for contemplation, for observing and listening. And worse yet: all the rushing around is often counterproductive. And when we are forced to be still — because we’re in line for something, or waiting at a doctor’s appointment, or on a bus or train — we often get antsy, and need to find something to do. Take a moment to think about how you spend your days — at work, after work, getting ready for work, evenings and weekends. Is this how you want to spend your life? If so, peace be with you. Then after a minute or two of doing that, contemplate your life, and how you’d like it to be. Then be that vision.

9 Mindfulness Rituals to Make Your Day Better | zen habits “Smile, breathe and go slowly.” - Thich Nhat Hanh, Zen Buddhist monk Post written by Leo Babauta. Are you simply moving through your day, without fully living? I did this for many years. It was as if life were just passing by, and I was waiting for something to happen. I always felt like I was preparing for something later. But today isn’t preparation for tomorrow. Fully live today by being mindful. You don’t need to do all of these, but give a few of them a try to see if they make your day better. Mindfulness Rituals Ritual isn’t about doing a routine mindlessly. Here are a few of my favorites: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. These rituals aren’t the only time you should be mindful, but they’re great reminders.

The 7 States of Consciousness - Psycanics: A Science of Being and Life Consciousness is not a fixed energy or quantity. Consciousness varies greatly from person to person, some people being much more aware, alert, wise, causal, loving, and happy (the Essence Energies) in life than others. Consciousness of Self (and therefore, consciousness of Essence) also varies in the same person in the normal daily cycle of sleeping and waking. Note: There are 10 easily identified stages of human consciousness on the journey from Materiality to Spiritual Illumination. Your Consciousness is your ability or your amount of awareness of both Self and Other (anything in the psycanic or physical universes). It is hard to classify something as fluid, complex, and multi-dimensional as Consciousness (Essence), and the different spiritual schools have various points of view on how to do so. The Seven States are: Dreamless Sleep Dreaming Sleep Walking Sleep Awake, Enlightenment Samadhi Illumination, Unity Cosmic Consciousness Brief explanation of each State Lost in the mind.

Learning Meditation Home Page Falling Down the TM Rabbit Hole, How TM Really Works, a Critical Opinion How to do Zazen - Seated Meditation Video Hi, I am Patrick and today we are talking about Zazen and how to do it. Meditation isn't just for buddhas or monks; it's for everybody that can be done at almost any time. So let's get started. When you sit, you are going to want to elevate your pelvis. The most useful thing for this is something like a Zafu, it's a round Japanese shape. As you sit, you want to have a stable base as possible. And finally, classic full-lotus posture. Most important physical component of meditation is the spine. Another thing to look out for is the shoulders. Zazen can be done from anywhere between 15 minutes to one hour. The idea of the zazen is to have a clear empty mind without chattering thought. Like a monkey you are constantly climbing from tree to tree, the mind meets some random thoughts or random thought. I am only half as serious with these actions and things. But at times you will be so wrapped inside your thoughts, you will feel like this.

Psychedelic '60s: Home Page THE SUMMER OF 1967, with its "Love-Ins," "Be-ins," and "Flower Power," came to be known as "The Summer of Love," and was one of the seminal moments of our generation. Over thirty years later, we who came of age during the turbulent decade of the sixties are dismayed to realize that, to the young adults of today, those years are now ancient history. The "Psychedelic Sixties" broke the rules in every conceivable way from music to fashion (or lack of it), to manners and mores. Boundaries were challenged and crossed in literature and art; the government was confronted head-on for its policies in Vietnam; the cause of civil rights was embraced by the young; and mind-expanding drugs were doing just that. Were the sixties the best of times or the worst of times? Did America evolve as a nation and we as individuals?

Meditation for beginners The strange thing is that when I was 15, I meditated quite a bit. I was dealing with some anger issues (mostly anger about being a teenager in a not-challenging-enough school system whose friends had started to act in inexplicable ways) and I’m not sure how I learned about it, but I had a regular practice for almost a year. Fast-forward 18 years, and I have a regular practice going again, but barely engaged in the practice in the interim. Beginning to meditate again was a challenge, and it took almost a year of knowing I should, wanting to, and planning on doing it before I finally started down the path. I’m a believer in the positive effects of meditation, because I remember them from when I was 15; I could go from the throes of an almost-hysterical freak-out to relative calm in less than 15 minutes, using breathing and visualization. But if you’re like me and have wanted to start, but have found it to be less easy than you expected, here are some thoughts that might help. Also on MNN:
