Sheffield City Council CIO says you can keep your cloud and BYOD - 04 Jun 2012 Budget cuts are forcing Sheffield City Council CIO Paul Green to take a very cautious approach to new IT investments while his department focuses on getting the most out of the authority's existing infrastructure. In an exclusive interview with Computing, Green said: "A critical area for me is to demonstrate we're truly utilising what we've already invested in. Are we truly exploiting what we've implemented over the last three years, for example? Green said Sheffield Council is "slap bang in the middle" of a seven-year contract with outsourcing firm Capita to maintain and improve IT services within the organisation. "We have a very close eye on this," he told Computing. Cost efficiency is also an issue for Green. For Green, the cloud's main attraction is that it has the potential to make data sharing and communication between departments easier. Green is sceptical about the benefits of BYOD. "Why would an end user wish to bring their own device into my organisation?"

"It's become the phrase du jour," says Gartner senior analyst Ben Pring, echoing many of his peers. The problem is that (as with Web 2.0) everyone seems to have a different definition. As a metaphor for the Internet, "the cloud" is a familiar cliché, but when combined with "computing," the meaning gets bigger and fuzzier. [ Stay on top of the state of the cloud with InfoWorld's "Cloud Computing Deep Dive" special report. Cloud computing comes into focus only when you think about what IT always needs: a way to increase capacity or add capabilities on the fly without investing in new infrastructure, training new personnel, or licensing new software. Cloud computing is at an early stage, with a motley crew of providers large and small delivering a slew of cloud-based services, from full-blown applications to storage services to spam filtering. 1. 2.

Why Marketers Need To Channel Captain Kirk Twelve years ago, my flight home from Cleveland to San Diego was cancelled due to blizzard conditions. Continental Airlines ostensibly did me a favor by giving me a hotel and meal voucher for a Holiday Inn 30 miles from the airport. As I crawled to the hotel front desk at 1 a.m., I spotted a group of Trekkies walking in my direction. For a brief moment, I felt as if I had been transported to an alternate universe that resembled the Starship Enterprise. This is how I felt while attending the Mid-Atlantic Marketing Summit in Baltimore. The well-planned sessions got me thinking: Are CMOs and senior marketing executives orbiting this new "data galaxy" out of necessity, or out of curiosity? Marketing is expected to play a bigger role in the buying cycle--yet buyers don't buy based on Facebook "likes." Offline community engagement drives your brand. Captain Kirk, the Starship Enterprise commander, was respected for balancing his intuitive and logical qualities. Related articles:

RetaiLigence - Extending Your Local Presence In The Mobile Channel - (Build 20100625223402) Cloud Computing Wikipedia Cloud computing metaphor: For a user, the network elements representing the provider-rendered services are invisible, as if obscured by a cloud. Cloud computing is a computing term or metaphor that evolved in the late 1990s, based on utility and consumption of computer resources. Cloud computing involves application systems which are executed within the cloud and operated through internet enabled devices. Purely cloud computing does not rely on the use of cloud storage as it will be removed upon users download action. Clouds can be classified as public, private and hybrid.[1][2] Overview[edit] Cloud computing[3] relies on sharing of resources to achieve coherence and economies of scale, similar to a utility (like the electricity grid) over a network.[2] At the foundation of cloud computing is the broader concept of converged infrastructure and shared services. Cloud computing, or in simpler shorthand just "the cloud", also focuses on maximizing the effectiveness of the shared resources.
