About this Viz Join us as we explore the diligent work of Tableau Public authors the world over: FORM 1: An affordable, professional 3D printer by Formlabs Are you frustrated that low-end 3D printers don’t have the quality to make the true beauty of your designs real? Do you dream of having the power and resolution of a truly professional machine on your desktop? We’ve created an easy-to-use system that rivals the output of high-end printers at a fraction of the cost. Our reason for starting this project is simple: there are no low-cost 3D printers that meet the quality standards of the professional designer. As researchers at the MIT Media Lab, we were lucky to experience the best and most expensive fabrication equipment in the world. We’ve been hard at work for over a year, and with your help, we’re ready to take the Form 1 into full-fledged production. We’ve gone to extraordinary lengths to design a complete 3D printing experience: Read on for more details on what you’ll help bring into the world (and onto your desktop) if you support this effort. For most designers, the extruded plastic (i.e. Great hardware is only half the battle.

It’s time to step forward – BCN3D – The new 3D Printer « RepRapBCN – Barcelona, España, Europe, World Some months ago we assembled and tested a MendelMax. We got delighted because we can reach higher speeds without having any problems of vibrations or any decrease in quality. This try was something that rounded our heads these months during the long workshop weekends… In October we decided that we should try something else. Our intention with that machine is to create a good base to grow. We also think that this machine can introduce RepRap in new markets. Having all this in account, we thought in MendelMax as a good start, and introduced all this feedback in this design. It is for this last reason that we are going to release improvements for this machine during the next months. You can get your BCN3D here.

Wearable Cartography - Portable Mapping System Researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory have developed a portal mapping system that transmits remotely a digital map of the wearer’s environment. The concept behind the technology is known as simultaneous localization and mapping or SLAM and previously had only been applied to mapping by robots. The device was conceived as a way to help first responders and emergency management personnel assess and understand the spatial component of an emergency situation. By enabling emergency responders the ability to generate real-time maps as they explore a location, the remote transmission of the spatial layout of a building can help external commanders the ability to better manage emergency situations. The device is outfitted with several technological sensors to help map the physical environment. The prototype also comes with a button the user can depress to mark areas of interest.

Shrunk down an Arduino to the size of a finger-tip! by Open Source RF RFduino: A finger-tip sized, Arduino compatible, wireless enabled microcontroller, low cost enough to leave in all of your projects! The RFduino has Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy built-in, which enables it to wirelessly talk to any smartphone that has Bluetooth 4.0. Currently we have several open source apps built for the iPhone which were used in our demos. Open source Android apps are next. The RFduino has a Nordic 32 bit ARM Cortex-M0 processor, so it has more power then the UNO, however it still runs the same, simple Arduino code the UNO runs, so there is no need to learn any new programming language or environment. Your standard Arduino sketches run on the RFduino. The RFduino GPIO lines all support, Digital IO, Analog ADC, SPI, I2C, UART and PWM. The RFduino is similar to the Arduino UNO or DUE, except the RFduino is a fraction of the cost and size, in addition has wireless smartphone connectivity built-in! The RFduino is a stand-alone board, just like the Arduino UNO. - Armen

Metamáquina - Metamáquina - criamos máquinas que criam máquinas What are the Top 5 Visualizations of All Time? A post from Andy Cotgreave (pictured below), Tableau Senior Product Consultant, recapping one of his presentations from the 2012 Tableau Customer Conference last week: Data visualization has a long history, but there are certain visualizations which have impacted data visualisation and society more than any others. Here's my breakdown of the top 5 visualizations of all time. Do you want to see the slides I used? When considering these visualisations, you should consider what they can teach us today as we sit at our desks using Tableau. They were designed to create change. These vizzes, old and new were hand-crafted or hand-coded and these authors had to make a decision based on every single design decision. #5 - John Snow's Cholera Map In August 1854, a cholera outbreak killed 500 people in ten days in Soho, London. This map that changed the way the world understood cholera. #4 - Hans Rosling and Gapminder Rosling is a Swedish doctor, academic and statistician. What makes it work?
