During the mid 1700's a religious sect was founded in England, UK. In 1774 the first Shaker village was set up in America. They remained in New England and New York where they lived lives of abstinence. They believed in simplicity, communal living and common ownership. Every object in the home was devoid of decoration therefore interiors were rustic and raw. This austerity can be gathered from two of their favored sayings, 'whatever is fashioned, let it be plain and simple and for the good' and 'Beauty rests on utility'. The revered writer/poet William Blake wrote a song in 1789 that was inspired by the Shakers called, Songs of Innocence. The image below shows how Shaker interior design can be adapted into your home. Get the Shaker style: Color: to be honest with you 'simple' is key, so select from a neutral color palette and stick to it. Click here for an in-depth review of COLOR

the johnson banks thought for the week The man who gave Michael Johnson his first job, Wally Olins, died yesterday. In this piece Johnson remembers some of Olins’ famous foibles. I first met Wally nearly thirty years ago, when, as a nervous student, I took a train down to London from the soggy shores of the North-West, clutching a box of slides of my final project. I’m not sure how my slightly hapless tutor had managed to swing the already world-famous Olins as my external project examiner but there I was, in the ubiquitous eighties design consultancy reception, perspiring furiously. My precise memories of the next two hours are unclear. Some things remain mercifully fuzzy, such as the mad search for a slide projector and usable carousel, and what, precisely, Wally said. Wally’s ability to stir up an almighty kerfuffle was, of course, legendary. Olins was also famously critical of other speakers on the conference circuit. But the formidable front he presented was tempered by a genuinely good-natured side.

Pecked Clean | Page 11 In the library this week I found a copy of Atkinson Sign Painting, by Frank H Atkinson, a sort of trade manual-cum-brochure originally published in the US in 1909. Type “vintage signs” or “handpainted signs” into Google, and you can see for yourself the sort of hideous modern versions that are peddled to a commercial market. Well balanced and baroque almost to the point of being psychedelic in places, there’s something very pleasing about Atkinson’s original designs. In yesterday’s workshop we attempted to make pixelated images from modular components. …and here’s Mr Ian Wright showing how it should be done. Mare Street Tescos in Hackney, having a bad day. From one old format to another – with its collection of factory-standard blank audio cassettes, Tapedeck.org demonstrates that size need be no handicap when it comes to producing classic design. Earlier this week I mentioned the charity shop record sleeve bonanza that is LP Cover Lover.

Awiligar’s reading house Architect Achmad Tardiyana went for recyclable materials for his home. What is more: On the ground floor it morphs into a public space. Rumah Baca, the private residence of architect Achmad Tardiyana, is located at Awiligar area in the north east of Bandung. In general, the development of northern Bandung has been closely monitored due to overdevelopment, which causes frequent flooding downstream, especially in the low lying southern plain of Bandung. Tardiyana designed his own house with a minimum impact on the natural as well as on the social environment. The house stands on a large plot and also served as an exercise in working with humble, organic and reused materials. Achmad TardiyanaAchmad Deni Tardiyana or Apep for short is an influential figure among the younger generation of Indonesian architects.

swissmiss Littlepixel internets™ Etienne Mineur Dazzle camouflage Family of ship camouflage Unlike other forms of camouflage, the intention of dazzle is not to conceal but to make it difficult to estimate a target's range, speed, and heading. Norman Wilkinson explained in 1919 that he had intended dazzle primarily to mislead the enemy about a ship's course and so cause them to take up a poor firing position.[a] Dazzle was adopted by the Admiralty in the UK, and then by the United States Navy. Dazzle attracted the notice of artists such as Picasso, who claimed that Cubists like himself had invented it.[3] Edward Wadsworth, who supervised the camouflaging of over 2,000 ships during the First World War, painted a series of canvases of dazzle ships[b][4][5][6][7] after the war, based on his wartime work. Intended purposes[edit] At first glance, dazzle seems an unlikely form of camouflage, drawing attention to the ship rather than hiding it.
