Slash Fiction is Like a Banquet Slash Fiction is Like a Banquet is an essay written by Arduinna in early 1999 in response to a mailing list discussion about the rash of very similar, often very short, stories being posted at the time.[1] It was first published on the web as a guest rant on Sandy Herrold's website, Confessions of a Fannish Butterfly.[2] Shortly thereafter, it went up on Arduinna's website as well. Some fans know it as "the hummus essay." The central metaphor of the essay holds that the world of slash fandom is like a banquet to which we each bring a beloved dish...but once it becomes customary to bring lemon-garlic hummus from the store, everyone starts bringing the same thing, and as a result our feast is impoverished. Years later Arduinna offered insight into the origins of the essay: I wrote it one Saturday during a list discussion on... er. A pan-fandom slash discussion list on onelist, which in my head is called "oneslash" but I'm not entirely certain that's correct.

Introducing Mynd Everyday, I come across reports and articles on the Web that bear on the topic of memory and learning, and I faithfully file them away, with the intention of doing 'something' with them. Many get put in my file of articles to discuss, or riff off, in my blog - which grows and grows, until I end up with huge Word documents containing articles NOT discussed in 2009, 2010, 2011 ... I have tried a variety of ways to at least spin off those worthy of mention that I don't have the time or inclination to discuss. None of these have proved satisfactory. What I want - because my abiding belief, that underscores what this website is about, is that very little is particularly helpful on its own - is to have these reports and articles recorded, tagged and categorized, so that we can follow or explore a specific topic.
