iPads + Water Rockets = Fun Science & Math Lesson This morning I stopped by my friend Mike Morrell’s 9th grade science class. It was water rocket launch day so I knew it would be a fun day. Mike’s students have been working on rocket designs and building their rockets for a while. The water rockets are the first phase of the unit. I am also an advocate for the flipped classroom, yet at the same time I also have my concerns about flipping a classroom. This model still hinges upon great teachers, and engaging curriculum and instruction. So why not combine PBL and the flipped classroom? It can be an excellent match when you consider some of the following tips. 1. The key piece here is short. 2. I love it when students assign their own homework. 3. Flipping isn't just videos, because -- let's be honest -- videos can get boring after a while. 4. If you are concerned with students taking an excessive amount of time in actually constructing the PBL product, give a technology choice or choices as an element of the final product. 5. Not all of our students have access the technology. PBL and the flipped classroom model can play well together.

This allows the educator to advise and challenge the students inside the classroom safe in the knowledge content is delivered elsewhere. Of course, this is not a new concept, students have always been asked to prepare for the next class. Technology has just made it more stimulating to learn at home. Educators can edit their videos to provoke thought and assign work to be collected electronically and annotated before the next contact time. So what to do in the classroom? My personal view – anything that can enhance learning. There is nothing wrong with the delivery of content with stimulating development tasks and thought provoking plenary and those educators are very successful and students learn a great deal.
