Your ISP Is Screwing You: As Your Service Costs Go Up, Their Backbone Costs Go Down In Japan, a multiple-megabit Internet connection costs pennies. I pay $99 for 50-mbps (and that’s really about 1 mbps (when it’s not raining) in Brooklyn. But why, you ask? Well, to hear cable companies (and carriers) tell it, it costs a pretty penny to get all that data to your door. Providers have to lease connectivity from the backbone and, as such, they’re forced to add caps to prevent us users from sucking down too much data and bankrupting them. But Mr. First, take a look at this. But there is a real cost for boosting capacity to meet nonstop video streaming. Basically, ISPs claim our data usage is going up and they must react. Basically, they’re quietly raising our rates while pretending to prevent a tragedy of the commons. It all comes down to provisioning. We pay the same amount per month but their costs per subscriber are a fraction of that. Cringeley writes: That 250 gigabytes-per-month works out to about one megabit-per-second, which costs $8 in New York.

Collected Quotes from Albert Einstein [Note: This list of Einstein quotes was being forwarded around the Internet in e-mail, so I decided to put it on my web page. I'm afraid I can't vouch for its authenticity, tell you where it came from, who compiled the list, who Kevin Harris is, or anything like that. Still, the quotes are interesting and enlightening.] "Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction." Copyright: Kevin Harris 1995 (may be freely distributed with this acknowledgement)

The Book Surgeon (15 pieces) Using knives, tweezers and surgical tools, Brian Dettmer carves one page at a time. Nothing inside the out-of-date encyclopedias, medical journals, illustration books, or dictionaries is relocated or implanted, only removed. Dettmer manipulates the pages and spines to form the shape of his sculptures. "My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception," he says. "The richness and depth of the book is universally respected yet often undiscovered as the monopoly of the form and relevance of the information fades over time. Dettmer is originally from Chicago, where he studied at Columbia College. Update: Read our exclusive interview with the Book Surgeon here. Brian Dettmer's website

What Does Your Body Language Say About You? How To Read Signs and Recognize Gestures - Jinxi Boo - Jinxi Boo Art by LaetitziaAs we all know, communication is essential in society. Advancements in technology have transformed the way that we correspond with others in the modern world. Because of the constant buzz in our technological world, it's easy to forget how important communicating face-to-face is. When conversing old-school style, it's not only speech we verbalize that matters, but what our nonverbal gestures articulate as well. Body language is truly a language of its own. 10% from what the person actually says40% from the tone and speed of voice50% is from their body language. Lowering one's head can signal a lack of confidence. Pushing back one's shoulders can demonstrate power and courageOpen arms means one is comfortable with being approached and willing to talk/communicate

BUILD - Steampunk Sub-Machine Gun So here it is, my first ever Steampunk build and I'm really quite happy with it. You may have read my other post on how I came across the Steampunk movement and if you haven't - and to avoid double up - you can find it here. Long story short, I'd never even heard the term up until a couple of weeks ago and then a chance encounter on a tram with a magazine made me realise that I loved the style and needed to make something. So this may well be the first of a few items of this ilk over the coming weeks and months. The other post has a link to all of the build photos and a little more background. This gun is loosely based on a Sterling Sub-Machine Gun and has a little bit of Star Wars thrown in for good measure. The main components that I used are as follows; a telescope, candlestick holders, brass light fittings, valves, threaded rod, a vintage blowtorch, a door knocker, leather, brass tubing and a selection of nuts, bolts and computer parts from my hoarded items. Think Rocketman...
