Here we will demonstrate how to do this. Printing for the first time in a machine with a fresh install of Debian Sarge is not as easy as one might think. Part 1: The Nightmare First we must make sure we can print from the Debian Sarge PC to the printer attached to it. cupsys cupsys-client cupsys-driver-gimprint cupsys-driver-gimprint-data Besides these packages, Synaptic selected the next packages or they were already installed: libcupsimage2 libcupsys2-gnutls10 Finally, this package is necessary or Mozilla Thunderbird won't print at all: cupsys-bsd The packages can be installed usingSynaptic or using the apt-get command as usual for Debian. The soundcard in some laptops like the Intel HDA cards can have issues in Ubuntu. What is needed is to update and add more functionality to the ALSA driver. What usually happens is that the user gets no sound, very quiet sound, or sound randomly works. Even boot up time can be affected I have tried this procedure on an ICH7 HDA Intel equipped Toshiba laptop and it worked. Download the ALSA driver update script here. Secure Boot bootloader for distributions available now I'm pleased to say that a usable version of shim is now available for download. As I discussed here, this is intended for distributions that want to support secure boot but don't want to deal with Microsoft. To use it, rename shim.efi to bootx64.efi and put it in /EFI/BOOT on your UEFI install media. Now generate a certificate and put the public half as a binary DER file somewhere on your install media. If you want, you're then free to impose any level of additional signing restrictions - it's entirely possible to use this signing as the basis of a complete chain of trust, including kernel lockdowns and signed module loading. This binary does not contain any built-in distribution certificates. A couple of final notes: As of 17:00 EST today, I am officially (rather than merely effectively) no longer employed by Red Hat, and this binary is being provided by me rather than them, so don't ask them questions about it.
