ABEER SEIKALY

ABEER SEIKALY
Human life throughout history has developed in alternating waves of migration and settlement. The movement of people across the earth led to the discovery of new territories as well as the creation of new communities among strangers forming towns, cities, and nations. Navigating this duality between exploration and settlement, movement and stillness is a fundamental essence of what it means to be human. In the aftermath of global wars and natural disasters, the world has witnessed the displacement of millions of people across continents. Design is supposed to give form to a gap in people’s needs. Its shape is derived from the song “Spiegel im Spiegel”, consolidating the main sequence spectrogram of the song into the curves of a roof. This cloud of sound forms an introverted space within where the music is played and listened to and a space underneath that becomes the work and meeting place for the people interested in the legacy of the composer. The cloud only touches the ground where it is thickened to house the performance space, and otherwise hovers between the trees, like the tree house of the observation platform, suspended in the natural environment of the forest. The complex rooms of the program are organized in their functional groups and combined into a box building that is placed underneath the roof.

Four Future P2P Scenarios This entry is about the theory of the four future scenarios for a collaborative economy, firstly developed by Michel Bauwens. It is important to mention that Vasilis Kostakis and Michel Bauwens are working on a research monograph that explores the relation of capitalism and the Commons. The book Network Society and Future Scenarios for a Collaborative Economy is contracted by Palgrave Macmillan. Videos: Books: Kostakis, V. & Bauwens M. Articles: Bauwens, M. & Kostakis, V. This essay attempts to simplify possible outcomes by using two axes or polarities which give rise to four possible scenarios. Netarchical Capitalism (NC) We define as “netarchical capitalism” the first combination (upper-left) which matches centralized control of a distributed infrastructure with an orientation towards the accumulation of capital. Distributed Capitalism (DC) The second combination, (bottom-left) called “distributed capitalism”, matches distributed control but with a remaining focus on capital accumulation.

These Freaking Awesome Tents Get Solar Power, Can Harvest Water And Fold Up by MindsAlpha This weather proof fabric is attached to strong bendable, compressed plastic which can open to create vent holes and exits and seal to keep warm. It’s a very strong, sturdy structure that can fold up, collect rainwater and charge a battery with solar farbric. It was developed by Abeer Seikaly, with the Weaving a Home project and was intended for refugees. The preformed tube members are woven into cloth and can be bent. I highly suggest visiting their website to peruse the technical schematics. And you can shower in it: Image Credits: Collapsible woven refugee shelters powered by the sun More than 40 million people worldwide have been displaced from their homes and left to find shelter in strange lands. Maybe they find a tarp, or a tent, but their quality of life almost always remains dismal. To close this gap in need, Jordanian-Canadian architect and designer Abeer Seikaly designed a new kind of shelter. One that allows refugees to rebuild their lives with dignity. RELATED: Gorgeous shape-shifting shelters for nomads and refugees that move with the weather Seikaly, now living in Amman, Jordan is well poised to design a dwelling for refugees given that her ancestors in Jordan probably toggled between nomadic and sheltered life in the desert for centuries. “The movement of people across the earth led to the discovery of new territories as well as the creation of new communities among strangers forming towns, cities, and nations,” writes Seikaly in her design brief.

Geodesic Dome Calculator — ByExample.com Our geodesic dome calculator will calculate the length and number of struts for 2V, 3V, and 4V geodesic domes based on the specified radius. It's a useful tool for planning the size of your dome. Radius = 7 meters * Strut lengths are from vertex to vertex. When designing and building a dome strut lengths will have to be reduced if using connectors and will have to be increased if using bolts to connect flattened ends of pipe. To re-calculate the strut lengths enter a new value for the dome's Radius below. Numbers must be entered in decimal format, IE 10.5 feet, not 10 feet 6 inches. Use the pulldown menu to choose your units.
