J House by Domino Architects, Tokyo — urdesignmag Japanese firm Domino Architects has renovated an apartment in Tokyo by installing several wooden boxy volumes. The flat is located in a developing district around Tokyo and was designed for a young family with a two-year-old child. Considering the change of lifestyle due to child’s growth within a limited floor space, Domino installed corners, blind spots and niches with boxy volumes in order to enrich a variety of space. No new walls were installed. They used a variety of textures and materials in tangible areas to give a rich, tactile sensation to the experience of the space. Domino characterized each small areas with its representative colors and tried to lead the image of space as a series of small impressive scenes. Korostetaan nyt että mies ei ole puuseppä eikä mikään muukaan käsityöalan tyyppi, mutta sitäkin uutterampi kokeilemaan. Nyt jälkikäteen ajateltuna aika monta juttua olisi pitänyt tehdä toisin (se telkkarin remonttireiska tarvis varmaan aimo läjän rauhoittavia tämän nähdessään), mutta tämä on kuitenkin tosi herttanen ja toimiva kapistus, ja kerrassaan hyödyllinen isolle perheelle. Laatikkoja on viisi, yksi jokaiselle perheenjäsenelle. Tätäkin pakerrettiin siis vähällä rahalla, vaan vanerihan ei mitään halpaa ole. Vaneripaloja tuli siis yhteensä 15; viisi soiroa, viisi kantta ja viisi palaa sivulle. Ja lopuksi sitten leikkelin lempparivyöni (kutistunut kesän aikana kaapissa omituisesti) ja niistä tehdyt silmukat ruuvattiin kansilevyyn kiinni.
