Build yourself a portable home - a mongolian yurt Yurt/Gher Construction 101 A guide to Building Yurts...or more specifically, how I built mine! Based on Knowledge Gained from "Doing it Myself", and reading about it on-line. I've now built three yurts, for myself and friends, and we go camping in Luxury in these a few times a year. If you like the outdoors, but you hate having to crawl around in pokey little tents then this one's for you! We sleep two of us in luxury in this tent, in a full queen-sized bed! We have dedicated hanging space for our clothes so they don't crumple or anything, and lockable boxes for our belongings (or a lock on the door works too!) When we invite other camping-inclined friends over for a party in our tent, we can confortably fit 15-20 people in, sitting around on cushions and lounging on the bed and on the rugs on the floor... now that's what I can a party tent! If you like pictures, please be sure to have a look at step 9 - it's got over 50 assembly photos on that step alone !

Hack your solar garden lights. Solar garden lights.... How on earth do they manage to sell something with a solar panel, rechargeable battery, step-up converter, LED and the plastic and metal casing for a dollar/pound. You can't even buy the bare components for anywhere near that, in fact the solar panel alone would probably cost you five times the cost of the whole light! This project is about hacking your solar lights to make them different colours and potentially increasing the battery life too.Solar lights are great to hack. Here's the test subject for this project. Inside is a small NiMh cell and a PCB with the LED, a small inductor, a switch and a COB (Chip On Board) which is basically a bare integrated circuit which is stuck to the board, connected and then covered with a blob of black resin. If the LED pads have solder left across the holes then it can be removed with a bit of desoldering braid, which is a fine braided copper wire soaked in resin. And test by turning the light on and covering the solar cell.

Silk-Dyed Eggs {aka TIE-Dyed!} I posted this tutorial a few years ago and it has become somewhat of a tradition to bring it back every year! One of our family Easter traditions is dying eggs with pieces of silk. I saw a cute lady show Martha how to do it a few years ago and I ran upstairs right then to steal a tie! It’s way cooler than those cups of neon liquid that end up all over your clothes, your furniture and your hands plus it gives you an excuse to rid a man’s closet of ugly ties. Here’s the run-down: You need 100% silk for this to work. I try to find an assortment of colors and patterns. Usually it will tell you if it’s 100% silk right on the main label of the tie, but a lot of them don’t, and if that’s the case, check that little tiny end, it’s usually hiding there. The first step is to deconstruct the tie. Next you cut a piece large enough to cover an egg. Now, notice how I tied the eggs in the above photo- with the tie on the top of the long side of the egg. I wish eggs came like this at the grocery store.

Our designs have progressed enormously since 1995. For a much more comprehensive guide see The Complete Yurt Handbook or see the rest of our website A complete guide to making a Mongolian Ger by P.R. King First edition 1995, Second edition 1997. Third Edition Fully revised and expanded for 1998 Internet Edition Jan 2000 The Yurt The English word Yurt comes from the Russian Yurta describing a circular trellis walled framed tent. The Kirgiz yurt with bent-wood roof poles and crown and a domed overall shape. The two tiered yurt with a pointed roof and two layers of wall section placed one on top of the other. The Mongol or Kalmuk ger with straight roof poles, a heavy timber crown, often supported by two upright poles, and fitted with a wooden door. This proven design is equally well suited to the many uses for moveable dwellings in this country.

Homo ludens electronicus My interest in electronics started when I was 12 years old, although I had built electric devices (lighting systems, flashlights, solenoids, even a motor) much earlier. At age 12 I started the real thing: Radios, sound effect generators, light games, etc. This obsession of building things led to a career in electronics, but also it has become my most interesting hobby. I regularly design and build things, and now I will share my better documented projects with you. Each of the following links leads to a page giving constructional information (schematics, sometimes printed circuit layouts, and text) for an electronic project. Power supply and switching technology 13.8 Volt, 20 Ampere linear power supply: A semi-traditional power supply for communication equipment, using negative-rail regulation with grounded pass transistors in a configuration that gives some unique advantages. 160 Volt, 3 Ampere DC motor power supply: A very compact, efficient and simple off-line buck regulator.
