Dirk Loss: Windows-Tools on CD-ROM
This list has not been updated since 2007. Links may not work. Use a search engine of your choice. Having created several bootable Windows CD-ROMs with Bart's PE Builder, I thought how nice it would be if I could use some of the plugins on running systems (i.e. without having to reboot). So in spring 2004 I started searching the Internet for useful utilities that can be run directly from CD-ROM. These were my requirements: Must be available free of charge (at least for non-commercial use). Here's my list. If you have any comments or suggestions write to: mail at dirk-loss de. Optional: Use the tools together with PE Builder: If you want a really nice CD-ROM, start Bart Lagerweij's PE Builder, tell it to include the tools folder on the CD-ROM (by entering the path as a 'custom directory' on the start screen) and create appropriate entries for the Nu2menu system. Disable USB drives - remotely A while back we published an article about disabling USB drives. It included a little program that would make the registry change for you. We took it one step further this week. We just released our free remote USB disabler. It only disables storage devices. Portable WSCC simplifies access to SysInternals, Nirsoft utilities - Download Squad SysInternals and Nirsoft make a lot of really, really useful applications, but they're all standalone. Keeping them organized for easy access can get to be a bit of a pain, and that's when Windows System Control Center comes to the rescue. WSCC is a free, portable application designed to centralize and simplify access to these utilities.

Put your portable apps on a diet with AppCompactor - Download Squad I'm a big fan of John T. Haller's Portable Apps.com, and I was very excited by one of the apps that appeared in its RSS feed last night: AppCompactor. It is, of course, portable, open source, and designed to integrate with the PortableApps suite.

Run Applications on your USB Flash Drives USB Apps 12 July 2012 Comments: 0 Portable PC Wizard Analyzes, Benchmarks, Slices, & Dices - Download Squad We love kick-ass programs that run from our flash drives and don't take up a ton of space - especially when they come at us with a truckload of useful features. CPUID's PC Wizard is a portable system analysis and benchmarking with tricks to spare. Apart from offering an incredible amount of information about the hardware and software in your computer (file associations, driver versions, hardware revisions, system uptime, etc.), it'll benchmark it, monitor sensors and voltages, and even stress-test it. Benchmarking functions are surprisingly rich, testing everything from cpu, ram, drives, and even DirectX and MP3 performance. You won't get a huge assortment of systems to compare with, but you will get a good idea of how your rigs stacks up to some common configs.

USB Hacks: Endpoint Insecurity In 2006 I spent a lot of time researching USB based malware, even wrote a few tools to show the need for network administrators to manage and control removable media devices that were being introduced in the companies and organizations. To help security researchers and network administrators I made many of the tools that were developed by others as well as my own available for testing purposes on the USBHacks.com site. Much of my research was included in a module titled “Hacking USB Devices” in the Certified Ethical Hacker training materials by EC-Council. As a result of posting these tools I had some interesting inquiries over the past few years from both sides of the law, as such I chose to bring the site down. However, if you are a security researcher and wish to download the tools posted in the Certified Ethical Hacker training guide for module 41 contact me and I can provide the tools to you. Here is a brief outline of a few of the tools:

How To Make Skype a Portable App As yet, Skype doesn’t offer an official portable USB version of their software (with the exception of the U3 smart drive version) which frustrates a lot of people (including myself). This has led people to make an unofficial hack of a portable version for themselves. Read on to find out how to make skype portable.

HDHacker backs up and restores Master Boot Records - Download Squad The Master Boot Record (or MBR) of a hard drive contains the information your computer needs in order to know how to boot any operating systems installed on your system. Simple Port Forwarding Inexperienced computer users are usually having troubles understanding the port forwarding concept. Most of them hear about port forwarding in gaming or P2P forums where this is usually discussed when troubleshooting connections. Simple Port Forwarding is a portable software that tries to lessen the knowledge that is needed to configure port forwarding in a computer network. Port Forwarding on the other hand is only a issue of the computers connect to a router that establishes the connection to the Internet.
