Oakland Police Violence Raises the Stakes for the OWS Movement | Occupy Wall Street October 26, 2011 | Like this article? Join our email list: Stay up to date with the latest headlines via email. Editor's note: after this article was published, Oakland Mayor Jean Quan released a statement in which she promised "a minimal police presence at the plaza for the short term," and "a community effort to improve communications and dialogue with the demonstrators." Quan also said the city would investigate certain acts of police violence on October 25. Occupy Oakland has been the target of a notably vicious smear campaign mounted by the conservative media. When I first visited the camp on October 22, I found a very different scene. “We don't exclude the people at the margins,” one occupier told me. The other kernel of truth is the simple fact that camping outdoors for three weeks is always a somewhat messy business. Mayor Quan Joins the Club These narratives formed the basis for Oakland Mayor Jean Quan's decision to evict the protesters.

Occupy Oakland: Thousands gather for general strike Thousands of peaceful protesters gathered in downtown Oakland Wednesday morning to kick off a planned "general strike" to draw attention to the Occupy movement's core concern over economic inequality. The day's actions -- which some believe will mark the largest East Bay protest since the Vietnam War -- include marches on banks, teach-ins, a dance flash mob and an attempt to shutter the Port of Oakland come evening. Wednesday morning, loud music played in Frank Ogawa Plaza, the City Hall square that has been the site of the Occupy Oakland encampment. PHOTOS: Occupy protests around the nation A heavy response to those demonstrating the camp's demolition by riot-geared police lobbing tear gas placed Oakland's movement in the national and even international spotlight. Oakland Mayor Jean Quan has sought to placate protesters by allowing them to return, but many remain angry at her. FULL COVERAGE: Occupy protests around the nation "We're looking forward to a day of peaceful protest."

OccupyArrests | Documenting the Movement, One Arrest at a Time GENERAL STRIKE & MASS DAY OF ACTION – NOVEMBER 2 - Occupy Oakland Liberate Oakland, Shut Down the 1%GENERAL STRIKE & MASS DAY OF ACTION Wednesday November 2, 2011 Below is the proposal passed by the Occupy Oakland General Assembly on Wednesday October 26, 2011 in reclaimed Oscar Grant Plaza. 1607 people voted. 1484 voted in favor of the resolution, 77 abstained and 46 voted against it, passing the proposal at 96.9%. The General Assembly operates on a modified consensus process that passes proposals with 90% in favor and with abstaining votes removed from the final count. We as fellow occupiers of Oscar Grant Plaza propose that on Wednesday November 2, 2011, we liberate Oakland and shut down the 1%. We propose a city wide general strike and we propose we invite all students to walk out of school. All banks and corporations should close down for the day or we will march on them. While we are calling for a general strike, we are also calling for much more. The whole world is watching Oakland.

Occupy Oakland general strike – live | World news 12:00pm: Thousands of protesters are expected to gather in Oakland, California, for a general strike and mass day of action in support of the Occupy Oakland movement. Workers, university students and school pupils are all being urged to rally near the Occupy camp, with banks and large corporations expected to be targeted by marches. The strike aims to "shut down" the city, culminating with a march to the port of Oakland to prevent the transit of cargo. Activity is expected to centre on 14th Street and Broadway – where Scott Olsen, a former marine, was hit and seriously injured by a police projectile last week. Three demonstrations are planned, one at 9am local time (12pm ET), another at noon (3pm ET), and a third at 5pm (8pm ET). There are likely to be other, spontaneous "autonomous actions" – probably marches on banks and large corporations – taking place through the day. Our reporter Adam Gabbatt is on the scene in Oakland and will be providing live updates.

Occupy Protesters Aren't Weathering Winter Too Well So Far - National In places where the weather has already turned wintry, protester attendance has dwindling, giving Occupy Wall Street protesters in New York good reason to worry about how cold weather may mute their movement. There's already a growing concern among Occupy Wall Streeters in New York (and the hope of the less supportive Mayor Bloomberg) that the coming winter will bring an end to the outdoor encampment. Daily Intel's Alex Klein writes: Organizers admit that the protests may not be able to survive the winter in their current form ... But rather than imagine the horrors that may await them, protesters could simply look to a few unusually severe locales this week to see whether their weather woes are merited. Denver, Colorado Yesterday's low: 30 degrees. Meanwhile, cities like New York and Boston have a little while longer to plan, or just lower expectations.
