Text of Steve Jobs Commencement address (2005)
Video of the Commencement address. I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. The first story is about connecting the dots. I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. It started before I was born. And 17 years later I did go to college. It wasn't all romantic. Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. My second story is about love and loss. I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. I really didn't know what to do for a few months.

Less Framework 4 Let the Good Times Roll by Guy Kawasaki: How to Get a Standing Ovation When I started public speaking in about 1986, I was deathly afraid of public speaking—for one thing, working for the division run by Steve Jobs was hugely intimidating: How could you possibly compete with Steve? It’s taken me twenty years to get comfortable at it. I hope that many of you are are called upon to give speeches—it’s the closest thing to being a professional athlete that many of us will achieve. The purpose of this blog entry is to help you give great speeches. Have something interesting to say. It’s taken me twenty years to get to this point.

11 Ways to Cure Someday Syndrome | zen habits Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Alex Fayle of the Someday Syndrome blog. Someday Syndrome: not doing what you want to because you don’t know what it is, because you’re procrastinating about it, or because you have too much stuff getting in your way. Everyone suffers from Someday Syndrome at some point in their lives, often catching it repeatedly. For me, most recently, I’d been saying that I really should give running a try without doing anything about it. You probably have something similar going on in your life – a project, a task, a goal – that you just haven’t got around to doing yet. Right? I could quote Nike and say: Just Do It, but if it were that simple Someday Syndrome wouldn’t exist. I decided that here had to be an easier way than waiting for pain to push me into getting over myself and getting on with my goals. 1. Maybe you’re not doing something because in reality, it doesn’t fit with who you are. 2. 3. 4. I have a goal of running 20K next November. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

The Ten Videos to Change How You View the World - lifehack.org I believe that a sign of good information is that it makes you think. If reading a book, listening to a lecture or watching a video doesn’t change how you think, it probably isn’t that important. But if you encounter something that forces you to change your views, even if you don’t completely agree with it, you’ve found something valuable. The problem is where do you find these ideas? Recently I found a great place to get started. In this video, Steven Pinker tackles the myth that today is a more violent era than in the past. Pinker believes that a more sensitive reporting system has led us to believe violence has increased, when it has actually dropped. Particle accelerators producing black holes that could destroy the world? Plus, who doesn’t want to terraform Mars? Statistics generally aren’t described as beautiful, but Hans Rosling comes close in showing the information about our changing world. Are games becoming a serious medium?

How to Always Have Something Better to Talk About Than the Weather | ... Six years ago, when I lived in a snowy mountain village and paid my bills by cleaning high-end sinks and toilets, someone said something that prompted me to confront an uncomfortable truth about myself. A well-meaning coworker mentioned that she had been talking to another housekeeper about me. Oh? “She said, ‘David is a such great guy to work with, it’s just that he’s just so quiet.‘” I don’t remember how I responded, but I assume I tried to disagree somehow, and went back to my work hoping nobody would ever say that to me again. Quiet. I remember the rest of that day. “Maybe I don’t want to talk about what any of you want to talk about. My little internal rant echoed a common human pattern, though I didn’t see it at the time: When people feel inadequate in some way, they tend to make up whatever prejudices or beliefs they need to feel okay about it. Of course, nobody realizes it while they’re doing it. The Black Hole of Social Anxiety Silence seems to quickly become the smartest policy.

This Will Mindfuck You: The Double-Slit Experiment The video below shows scientific proof that there is something NOT quite logical or scientific about this universe. The mere act of observation can completely change the outcome of an event! Before I get too ahead of myself, you need to watch the video below to understand: (Forgive the corny cartoon character explaining the concept — at least he knows his stuff) Recap: When a camera observed the electrons, they acted as particles. However, when the no equipment was used to observe the electrons, they acted as waves and particles simultaneously. So what’s the reason for this? Want even further proof? Then in 2002, a group of researchers set up the experiment in a way that the electron could not possibly receive information about the existence of an observing instrument. The Results: The photons acted like particles 93% of the time that they were observed. What are the implications of this? 1. 2. 3. What other implications did you get out of these experiments?
