Where to Start with Nicholas Sparks Supposing you want to start reading Nicholas Sparks but you find his body of work intimidating? I get it. Q: So what you’re saying is you— A: Let’s get to the books! The Notebook Life is going pretty well for renowned coffee barista James Carnac. James Carnac goes on the run from the police and the coffee business to track down the robber and clear his own name once and for all. Also time is running out because James discovers he has cancer. The Wedding Viewed by many as Nicholas Sparks’ finest work and nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature, The Wedding is a dense post-modernist pre-fabulist novel of the Neo-Classical school (third wave), a complex character study about time and memory and the way in which, like sands in an hourglass, these are the days in which things happen. Message In A Bottle Ugh!

(tob)

Audiobooks to Download After You Finish Serial Like about five million other people, I am hooked on Serial, a podcast from This American Life exploring the 1999 murder of a high school senior in Baltimore. The girls’ ex-boyfriend was convicted of the crime and has spent the last 15 years in jail. Each week, journalist Sarah Koenig has looked at a different aspect of the case to try and figure out what happened with this story. Although the last episode of the season aired on Thursday, I have to admit that I haven’t finished the podcast yet – the boyfriend and I are saving the last five episodes for our drive to my parents’ house for Christmas. The Devil and Sherlock Holmes by David Grann David Grann is one of my favorite narrative nonfiction writers. The Suspicions of Mr. The Suspicions of Mr. Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer Jon Krakauer has a talent for picking out truly fascinating stories. Stiff by Mary Roach Like chattin’ up other readers and keeping track of your books on Goodreads?

I Liked Everything I Saw on Facebook for Two Days. Here’s What It Did to Me | Gadget Lab There’s this great Andy Warhol quote you’ve probably seen before: “I think everybody should like everybody.” You can buy posters and plates with pictures of Warhol, looking like the cover of a Belle & Sebastian album, with that phrase plastered across his face in Helvetica. But the full quote, taken from a 1963 interview in Art News, is a great description of how we interact on social media today. Warhol: Someone said that Brecht wanted everybody to think alike. The like and the favorite are the new metrics of success—very literally. I like everything. See, Facebook uses algorithms to decide what shows up in your feed. There is a very specific form of Facebook messaging, designed to get you to interact. The first thing I liked was Living Social—my friend Jay had liked it before me and it was sitting at the top of my feed. One thing I had to decide right away was what to do about the related items that appear after you’ve liked something. Sometimes, liking is counterintuitive.
