Trừ vài model chuyên nghiệp như Canon 1Ds, Canon 5D, Nikon D3, Nikon D700, còn lại đại đa số những chiếc DSLR hiện tại lại có cảm biến nhỏ hơn, dẫn đến khung ảnh bị thu hẹp lại từ 1,5 đến 2 lần tùy theo kích cỡ cảm biến. Vì vậy mà những người sử dụng máy DSLR thường nói về tiêu cự “hữu dụng”, có nghĩa là tiêu cự của ống kính phải nhân với trị số “crop” mới ra trị số đúng. Điều này có nghĩa là nếu bạn muốn có một góc nhìn tương đương tiêu cự chuẩn 50 mm ở một chiếc Nikon cropped DSLR, bạn sẽ cần một ống với tiêu cự là 33 mm (mà gần nhất là các ống 35 mm).
