Film-english This EFL lesson is designed around Head Over Heels an Oscar-nominated puppet animation directed by Timothy Reckart. Students practise using idiomatic expressions, watch a short film and talk about love and relationships. Language level: Intermediate (B1) – Advanced (C1) Learner type: Teens and adults Time: 90 minutes An Original Writer's Notebook Lesson from Corbett For this lesson's notebook page, after we explore Pat Benatar's metaphor in her song "Love is Battlefield," my students create original and interesting metaphors for the topic of love in their writer's notebooks; on a notebook page, each metaphor is established and extended upon with two details. Once students have practiced extending original love metaphors, they are asked to create new metaphors over the month that are more appropriate to their other core content areas: math, science, and social studies. Once a week in Language Arts class, students polish a new metaphor they have created outside of English class, then publish and illustrate it on a designated page in their writer's notebook. After the two-page notebook spread is complete, students can be reminded/prompted to use more metaphors during writing or during processing in the future. In 2012, I added a poetry extension lesson, which you can find below in the write-up. Idea #1...Teaching a Four-Metaphor Poem

Jo Knowles - Live Your Life: A Theme and a Challenge for 2013 Every year, in addition to writing a list of goals and dreams, I also pick a "theme" to help guide me in reaching them. This year's theme came as a gift from Maurice Sendak. A few weeks ago, I came across this very sad interview with Sendak and Terry Gross, illustrated by Christoph Niemann. I won't lie. It depressed me. Our language The English language is written and spoken in many different ways. The way we speak varies according to who we are, where we are, and who we're talking to. Language can make people feel superior or inferior, included or excluded, well informed or ignorant, impressed or appalled. The Music Room The Brain and Music Our brains are PATTERN SEEKERS! Using Wall Wisher in the Classroom On Friday I ran a short workshop about using online tools to brainstorm with students. One of the resources that I shared and had folks try out was Wall Wisher. Although not the most robust tool for brainstorming, Popplet is currently my favorite, Wall Wisher is easy to use and seemed to be a hit with my audience. Socratic Seminars Using Informational Text Photo Look at the front page of any day’s New York Times and you’ll find plenty for teenagers to discuss, whether meaty matters of global geopolitics, or lifestyle topics that hit closer to home. Here on the Learning Network, we’re discovering via the enthusiastic response to our first persuasive essay contest just how central the skill of argument is in many curriculums this year.

Free Educational Songs for Circle Time I always loved circle time with preschoolers … although when I had a Montessori school, we called it “line time” since our lines (created from colored electrical tape on the floor) were in the shape of an ellipse in one room and a circle in another. I even led “circle time” twice a week when I was a Montessori school director … too much fun to give up! And songs were always one of my favorite parts of “circle time.” I typically accompanied the songs on guitar, although CDs work very well, leaving hands free to use props or hand motions. How Flocabulary Works Writing is a critical part of the learning process and is supported by research and standards, from Bloom's Taxonomy to the Common Core. When students write their own academic rhymes, they build essential writing skills and master content. Oh, and did we mention it’s fun?
