How to put Windows XP on your USB thumb drive! Fred Langa offers a step-by-step and illustrated guide on how to boot XP from an ordinary USB drive. Chances are you already either have a USB "thumb" drive, or you will have one in the near future--these little solid-state flash memory devices are inexpensive, nearly ubiquitous, and very, very handy. Not only can they replace floppy drives for casual file transfers, but the larger capacity thumb drives also can serve as the basis for an excellent, fit-in-your-pocket software repair kit, letting you diagnose and repair PCs, including those that might otherwise be unbootable or that are locked by password or other problems. We've discussed USB drives before in "What's Behind The USB Drive Revolution". We also looked at ways to make a USB drive bootable from DOS in "Solving USB Boot Problems". Since our earlier discussions, three things have happened that can make it much, much easier to get XP to boot from a USB device. And there also can be issues in the USB devices themselves. 1 of 4

Prism Prism is a simple XULRunner based browser that hosts web applications without the normal web browser user interface. Prism is based on a concept called Site Specific Browsers (SSB). An SSB is an application with an embedded browser designed to work exclusively with a single web application. It doesn’t have the menus, toolbars and accoutrements of a normal web browser. Prism / SSB Objectives Looking at what has already been done and discussed about desktop/webapp integration, the following is a suggested roadmap for SSB experimentation: Separate process: When the webapp goes down or locks up, I don’t want anything else affected. Current Features Wishlist Add Taskbar icon representation option for the web applications. pref("network.proxy.autoconfig_url", " pref("network.proxy.type", 2) using a parameter in the .webapp file would be the best solution : proxy= webrunner gmail.webapp webrunner - Nope

Everyday tricks everyone should know Daily Kitten Chat Forum Tricks every woman should know…Nik The last several are a few of my own I’ve discovered… Peel a banana from the bottom and you won’t have to pick the little ‘stringy things’ off of it. Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster. Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mold! Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking. Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking. To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a Couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in beat them up. For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Leftover snickers bars from Halloween make a delicious dessert. chop them up with the food chopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. for 15 minutes!!! Easy Deviled Eggs gone.

Prism Bundle WebApp Bundle In addition to passing simple command line parameters, Prism can use a zipped bundle package to install a webapp. The bundle can hold additional resources currently limited to: Application INI settings Application icon Script for the application chrome, not the web content Installing a Bundle When Prism opens a webapp bundle it will unpack it into the webapps/{webapp-id} folder in your Prism profile. The webapp must have an ID in order to be installed. When Prism is launched with a "-webapp [bundle]" command line, the bundle must first be unpacked before the web application is launched. HowTo Here is a simple way to build a basic web application bundle: Create file called webapp.ini that contains something like: [Parameters] id=unique-app-id@unique-author-id.whatever uri= status=yes location=no sidebar=no navigation=no Zip the file to [whatever].webapp Double-click the webapp bundle or use prism -webapp [path-to-webapp] Structure winnt

8 totally awesome natural phenomena you probably didnt know about | ZME Science The Maelstrom When you hear a name like maelstrom, you just know it’s about something wicked. Introduced in English by Edgar Allan Poe from the Nordic languages, from which it came from the Dutch word maelstrom (maalstroom in modern spelling), it literally means crushing current, which is quite a very good description. digital representation of a maelstrom A maelstom is basically a very big and powerful whirlpool, a free vortex; a free vortex with quite a downdraft. Fire Rainbow The term ‘fire rainbow’ is really misleading; the correct term is circumhorizon arc. Of course, this rainbow is not formed the way ‘classic’ rainbows are formed. Waterspouts Waterspouts seem to be taken out of the Captain Planet series. Most of the time, they are weaker than land tornadoes, but some are extremely big and bring the water upward with immense speed and power. They can actually be tornadic or non-tornadic. The even rarer ‘cousin’ of the waterspout is the snowspout (or icespout). The Honduran Rain of Fish

Search redefined Anyone with even a remote interest in the semantic space has likely experienced the same roller coaster I have regarding Powerset. When I first spoke with Barney Pell over a year ago, the semantic tech sector was an entirely different landscape. I was intrigued by my conversation with Barney and the short demo I saw of Powerset-enabled search. How nifty that the engine knows what I mean by “who did IBM acquire”! But as months went by, we didn’t hear much from Powerset, save a seemingly incongruous Labs announcement. Powerset’s introduction today of its new Wikipedia search, which also integrates data from Freebase, could have a significant impact on the tech market overall, in that it changes the rules of the search game. Powerset’s changing of the rules is evidenced by one key statement made by the company: a page of search results, no matter how targeted, is just the beginning of the effort required by the user.
