Tuesday Tutorial: Paper Lantern Ornaments

Tuesday Tutorial: Paper Lantern Ornaments
Want a cute, simple decoration that you can make in minutes? These paper lanterns are perfect for the upcoming holiday season or as an everyday decoration! What a great way to add color to a room or to your holiday table :) Make a bunch and string them together as a garland, or put a bunch in a bowl, or in a hurricane glass in a bathroom or guestroom. You could also mail them (flat, before unfolding them ;)) to a friend as a fun "Merry Christmas" gift with quick instructions on how to unfold them. I decided to use holiday paper, but was thinking these would also be fun as everyday decorations with leftover scraps of scrapbooking paper or found/vintage paper. What you'll need: - Paper - enough to cut 15 strips - ½"x4" (7.5"x4") - 2 small brads - Ruler, 1/16" hole punch or pushpin to poke holes, exacto blade or rotary cutter and a cutting mat 1. 2. 3. (Back) 4. 5. 6. These would make a great garland - I strung a few together and they looked fabulous!

Fun with plasti-dip « Fellow Creatives Craft Meet-Up, Craftivity For our first meet-up the craft of choice was PLASTI-DIP , a rubberizing paint, normally used to coat tool handles and such. Inspired by beautiful plasti-dipped origami; my heart raced with the possibilities of all the chincey knick knacks that could be turned chic with one dip. Here are the results: Here’s How to Dip: Warning! Lessons learned: Plasti-dip takes longer to dry in rainy weather. Now you can mix your own colors and plasti dip comes in a spray too!

How About Orange Make-up Magnet Board We all know with craft blogs that original ideas are often hard to come by, we find ideas we love and make them our own but we didn't come up with the idea ourselves. I feel like I've finally done something original here and I'm excited about it. I'll show you the finished product and then explain. Behold my Make-up Magnet Board. I have a friend who is beautiful and stylish and has always loved make-up but recently took a course that intensified her love. The basket was a mess and I was overwhelmed with all my choices never knowing what to use, digging through to see what I had and find what I wanted was a pain. I painted it (The hard way, with a brush instead of spray paint. I went to the hardware store and picked up some metal and had them cut it to fit inside my frame. Here comes the brilliant part though. Here's the stash of eye shadows we're talking about (I've even added a couple since this picture). Next I wanted a place to store my brushes and liners though.

Sweet DIY Votives Here’s what you’ll need: 1. Measure the height and circumference of your jar, and cut strips of fabric to roughly fit (approx. 1cm wide – doesn’t have to be perfect). 2. In your small cup, pour in some glue and dilute it with a bit of water (about 1:2), mix well. It should be the consistency of slightly thicker water.. yes, I know I’m being vague but it shouldn’t make much difference to the end result. 3. Note: – I find that it’s ok to have fabric going above the top of your jar because it can be easily cut off after it’s dried. – I don’t mind the look of the overlapping lines of fabric once the candle is lit, but if you do try not to overlap the strips in the gluing process. ** Please only use only battery operated tea-lights (not real candles). The cherry blossom lantern With Chinese New Year just roaring in in just a few days, this seems apt. This one's from Joey. "Here's the Ikea hack I did on the Regolit lamp! I needed a soft glowy light source for the corner of my sitting room, but it has got to be cheapest possible, since we are on a budget....and it's t.i.g.h.t...so I remembered this lantern from Ikea. And I personalized it to suit the oriental feel of my home by painting cherry blossom branches on it, then later attached faux cherry blossom blooms onto those branches." See more of Joey's cherry blossom lantern and other hacks . I also take this opportunity to wish all my Chinese readers (and those celebrating it!) ^ well-wishes for happiness and prosperity *red packets filled with money.

How to Weave a Paper Ball Ornament When I was in Thailand, I would see the local people weave palm leaves into beautiful bowls, fans, balls and other amazing things. I asked my aunt if she knew how to make these things and she gave me a book that was all in Thai. I don't know how to read Thai, I can barely speak it. Somehow after a week of fumbling around with strips of paper, I managed to decode the pictures and figure it out. Here is my tutorial for you, it is not in Thai, and hopefully it won't take you weeks to make. I did take pictures, but please watch the video. Part 1 (Four strand braid) Part 2 (Paper weaving) Pop-out Photos Tutorial « Stitch-Craft AP Photo/Holly Ramer I’ve written a tutorial for the pop-out/3-D pictures I’ve been making as gifts. You can read my AP story here. (I always find it funny to see where the craft stories I write for AP end up.

wednes-diy | Free People Clothing Boutique Blog UPDATE: This post originally ran on March 23 2011, but with summer winding down we wanted to bring it back up for some late summer inspiration! a fellow fp girl sent this to me a couple weeks back and i’ve been thinking about it ever since! i can think of a million reasons why these would be awesome… as apartment décor, as outdoor party décor, and – wouldn’t they be the best thing EVER for camping in general or at a festival? just let them sit in the sun all day, and they’ll last all night! i am absolutely going to make some to bring with me to bonnaroo this year. you can buy a sun jar here, but you can make your own for much cheaper! what you need: a mason jar with a clear glass lid like this one from ikea, a solar garden light like the ones pictured above, which i found here, adhesive and glass frosting spray. start by spraying the inside of the jar with the frosting spray – this will help diffuse the light and give it a warm glow. don’t spray the lid though! last image.

you knew i was going to make one. they are all over pinterest....(i still am not signed up for pinterest because i don't have time for one more thing but browsing is fun!) so we made one. i took a box of 64 crayons and took out the blacks and browns.i used another small box and doubled up on the good colors i liked and hot glued them to the top of our canvas. then we turned our blow dryer to hot on high. not long after you set the hair dryer by the crayons they get shiny and then the wax starts to melt! and it dries really quickly too. seriously. what could be happier than this?? GREAT project. loved it today is the first FULL day with ALL my kids in ALL day school.yeah...i am smiling as i type that. it's good. it's quiet. i am rockin' it. removing wallpaper.....making code for craft weekend stuff.....doing my hair....going to lunch..... it's all good. hooray for school!

Toilet Paper Roll Categorically Crafting Show Since we celebrated Earth Day this month, I thought we should see a few "recycling" ideas. Last week was crafts with cans. This week, let's see what we create with the empty toilet paper (and paper towel) rolls. What projects have you created using yours? Here are a few I've found! Watch out!!! Jump back! Not only is TP roll art sophisticated enough for the master bedroom, it is classy enough for the fireplace mantle. Something Wonderful has two brilliant ideas for using TP rolls - to organize cords and to act as little packages. How cute is this giraffe made from TP rolls? Pretty little flowers all over the walls can be made with humble TP rolls. Use your TP rolls to decorate a frame link (Kevin and) Gillian did. You will never guess what this mini-book is made out of! If you are a very patient and precise person, try this cut out tree branches from the TP roll. You can paste the "Categorically Crafting" button onto your blog post. Scripture Cover I know I made this same tutorial last year but I improved it a bit by adding a button and elastic fastener to keep it together better. It is one of the first tutorials I created so it’s is pretty dear to my heart. It is a simple… Not a case necessarily… Just a cover with handles to make it easier to tote around. And, I think it’s pretty. :) I used an LDS quadruple combination but you can use this for any size book, bible, etc. Let’s get started. Materials: About 1/2 yard of canvas material 1/4 yard of cotton {or similar} liner fabric scissors and rotary cutter (rotary cutter not necessary but very very nice to have} iron sewing machine contrasting or matching thread pins! 1. Main cover piece: 8 1/2 inches by 15 inches I cut 1 liner piece and two canvas pieces. Side Pockets: 4 1/4 by 8 1/2 inches. They will become the sleeves that you slide the cover of the book into. Strap pieces: canvas piece 2 1/2 inches wide by 46 inches long liner piece: about 1 1/2 inch wide by 46 inches long Straps: Then sew.

Home Work - The TP Flower Project Some months ago I stumbled upon a really fun DIY with your kids blog post. While I have no kids, I still thought of saving that post and perhaps even try it myself one day (with or without kids...). Time passed and I completely forgot about it, until about a couple of months ago when I was going through my never ending "bookmarked web links" and I found it again. Then I took that entire pile of rolls, folded them, and cut them into thin strips Next step was to create flower like shapes that connect to each other Now that I had a general design, it was time to glue each flower. I decided to paint some of the flowers light blue (using the left-over paint from our blue line project), and then leave the rest of the flowers in their natural look Now that the flowers were all glued and painted, all that was left to do was to glue the flowers to each other and create a flowing connected design My someone and I decided to hang it on the wall next to our TV. What do you think...?

Tutorial: Homemade Sidewalk Chalk | oh my! handmade goodness by Michelle Vackar, Modern Handmade Child One of our favorite outside activities at our home is drawing with chalk on the driveway. You can play hopscotch, four-square, and of course draw and create silly stories. My daughters and I were talking one day as we played hopscotch about how to make chalk and I thought to myself, let’s try it! It ended up being quite a lot of fun. What you will need: • Toilet paper or paper towel tubes • Scissors • Duct tape • Wax paper • Small bucket or disposable container to make the recipe • ¾ cup of warm water • 1 ½ cups Plaster of Paris • 2-3 tablespoons of tempera paint • Paper bag or a “mess mat” ** we made six tubes of chalk – we simply doubled the above recipe Step 1: If you are using paper towel tubes, cut each tube in half, so it is roughly the length of a toilet paper roll tube. Step 2: Cover one end of each tube with duct table to hold the contents within. Step 3: Cut as many pieces of wax paper as you have tubes.
