The Fallback Question For many people, the interesting career path that they feel most passionate about is one fraught with risk. Entrepreneurship. The creative arts. Professional sports. All of those career tracks – and many more – are ones where success is relatively hard to come by. Let’s say you’re a relatively skilled high school baseball player. The usual advice given to people in such high-risk career paths is to have a fallback career. Many people in many different career paths are given that same advice. Here’s the thing, though. When I find myself in situations where I can just shrug my shoulders and easily take another path if things don’t work out, I don’t perform at my best. When my back is against the wall and I know that I must pull through here, I tend to perform better than ever. It might sound like I’m advocating throwing a “fallback career” to the wind and just going for it. For some people, I am. I wouldn’t encourage anyone with health issues to do it. To me, it’s a good compromise.

Deep Habits: Three Tips for Taming Undecidable Tasks December 24th, 2014 · 18 comments Deciding the Undecidable In a recent blog post I introduced the notion of undecidable tasks — a particularly important type of work that’s not well covered by standard productivity advice. These tasks are crucial to my job as an academic — as they are to many creative fields — so I devote a lot of attention to understanding how best to tackle them. Today I want to share three tips along these lines that have worked well for me… Work on Undecidable Tasks Both During and Outside Work Hours. The above tips have helped my work with the undecidable (i.e., my proof rate is higher when I structure my thinking in this manner). Better understanding this type of work is something I plan to pursue in the New Year.

10 Signs You’ve Found Your Calling By: Lissa Rankin MD, Wakeup World How can you tell if you’ve found your calling? As a doctor who was called to medicine at a young age but then wound up disillusioned by the system, questioning my calling, I’ve asked myself this question a lot. It’s been a long strange trip- first leaving medicine, then feeling called back, then leaving again only to find my role in healing our broken healthcare system as a writer, speaker, revolutionary, and teacher of physicians. Along the way, I’ve learned a few things about how to know whether you’re on the right track. 1. Even the gritty things, the disappointments, the regrets, and the screw ups, they were all prepping you for what you’re now being called to do. 2. You might be tempted to write them off as coincidences, only they’re too perfect, too exactly what you need in that particular moment, too much like miracles to call them accidents. 3. Doors you longed to walk through will slam shut. 4. 5. 6. Take Andy Mackie, for example. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Find The Thing You're Most Passionate About, Then Do It On Nights And Weekends For The Rest Of Your Life I have always been a big proponent of following your heart and doing exactly what you want to do. It sounds so simple, right? But there are people who spend years—decades, even—trying to find a true sense of purpose for themselves. My advice? Just find the thing you enjoy doing more than anything else, your one true passion, and do it for the rest of your life on nights and weekends when you’re exhausted and cranky and just want to go to bed. It could be anything—music, writing, drawing, acting, teaching—it really doesn’t matter. Is there any other way to live? I can’t stress this enough: Do what you love…in between work commitments, and family commitments, and commitments that tend to pop up and take immediate precedence over doing the thing you love. Before you get started, though, you need to find the one interest or activity that truly fulfills you in ways nothing else can. Say, for example, that your passion is painting.
How To Accomplish More By Doing Less Two people of equal skill work in the same office. For the sake of comparison, let’s say both arrive at work at 9am each day, and leave at 7 p.m. In truth, a 10-hour workday is too long, but in most companies long hours are the norm at the management level. Bill works his 10 hours essentially without stopping, juggling tasks at his desk and running between meetings all day long. Nick, by contrast, works intensely for approximately 90 minutes at a stretch, and then takes a 15-minute break before resuming work. At 3 p.m., he closes his eyes at his desk and takes a rest. Bill spends 10 hours on the job. By 1 p.m., Bill is feeling some fatigue. By 1 p.m., Bill is feeling some fatigue. It’s called the law of diminishing returns. Nick puts in the same 10 hours. Nick takes off a total of 2 hours during his 10 at work, so he only puts in 8 hours. It’s not just the number of hours we sit at a desk that determines the value we generate. During my 30s and 40s, I wrote three books. What Do You Do?
