But for the millions of women and girls living in low-income urban communities across the world, personal safety can be difficult to achieve – giving way to gender-based violence, social isolation or a lack of basic social services. With this challenge, we are asking the OpenIDEO community to help design solutions that enable women to feel safe and empowered, by contributing research, sharing ideas and collaborating with others during the challenge. Setting the Stage According to the latest UN Habitat Report, women make up the majority of the world’s poor—up to 70 percent in some countries. In order to frame the context for this challenge, Amplify convened an interdisciplinary group of subject-matter experts and community stakeholders to explore the issues underlying women’s safety. How might we all maintain wellbeing and thrive as we age? - Well Brewed Cafe Idea An accessible cafe for seniors to sip teas/ brews, chat, and share in cultural events. The space is a thriving center for programming, classes, and social meet ups! A cafe located close to senior centers for singers to sip tasty brews, take part in and host events, and connect to peers. Accessibility options include ramps, comfortable seating, a variety of table/chair arrangements, and large print menus. The concept is inspired by tea houses in Asia well loved by elderly communities. How might your idea scale and spread to reach as many people as possible? A full blown cafe dedicated to seniors might be resource intensive, but the concept can be tested and spread to communities by having senior nights at existing cafes or even opening cafe style spaces in senior centers. How might your idea attract and involve partners from health care, business, government, nonprofit or other sectors? Local community groups and health departments can host discussions and classes at the space.
