When Ideas Have Sex This is the first post in a new series, produced by Frog Design, drawn from their publication, Design Mind. The theme of the current issue -- from which this essay is drawn -- is "And Now the Good News." It presents ideas flowing from the most recent TED Global conference. As I write this, two artifacts of roughly the same size and shape sit on my desk: a cordless mouse and a hand axe from the Middle Stone Age. Both are designed to fit the human grip. The hand axe represents a technology that did not change for a million years; it evolved slower than the human skeleton. And yet, it is the mouse, not the hand axe, that is the key to understanding why human beings dominate the planet and why there has been such explosive prosperity and progress over the past 100,000 years. Cooperation turned us into specialists: I'll do this job, you do that one. The key human invention, therefore, was exchange? Homo erectus, the inventors of the hand axe, probably were like this.

Social Strategist Aren't Thinking Strategically! Today’s social strategies are not strategies. The evidence of this is reflected in a recent Altimeter Research report which indicates that the #1 objective for corporate social strategist in 2011 is “website integration.” Is web site integration a strategy? The difference between a strategy and a tactic is the difference between thinking and doing. Simply integrating “all things social into your web site” without thinking and defining the business and organizational strategy for using “all things social” is an accident looking for a place to happen. A Strategy Without Leadership Isn’t a Strategy While the demand for social media talent continues to rise there is a huge disconnect between the demand and the leaders behind the organizations hiring “social media gurus”. In an HBR article by Soumitra Dutta states: Take the world’s leading CEOs as a sample. Social media isn’t a secret but what seems to be a secret is why and how it is changing consumer behavior and workplace expectations.

8 Predictions for IT in 2015 From Gartner Gartner today announced eight predictions for IT in 2015. Last week, we looked at the broad trends Gartner and two other analyst firms expect to shape the future of IT. This latest announcement makes some more specific predictions about changes the firm's analysts expect to see by 2015 or earlier. For example, the firm predicts that 80% of enterprises will support tablets by 2013 and by 2014 90% of organizations will support enterprise applications on personal devices. The predictions are as follows: By 2015, a G20 nation's critical infrastructure will be disrupted and damaged by online sabotage. The second prediction, that revenue generated by IT will be a CIO compensation factor, is the most interesting to me. What do you think of these predictions?

Is Ranking Number One in Google Losing Its Significance? As you may have noticed, Google has been putting a great deal more emphasis on local these days than in years past. Think outside the box Meaning Think creatively, unimpeded by orthodox or conventional constraints. Origin 'Think outside the box' originated in the USA in the late 1960s/early 1970s. Various authors from the world of management consultancy claim to have introduced the phrase. "We must step back and see if the solutions to our problems lie outside the box." The 'box', with its implication of rigidity and squareness, symbolises constrained and unimaginative thinking. "Real thinking. The encouragement to look for solutions from outside our usual thinking patterns was championed in the UK by Edward De Bono, the psychologist and inventor, who coined the term Lateral Thinking in 1967 and went on to develop it as a method of structured creativity. So, what's this box? "Draw a continuous line through the center of all the eggs so as to mark them off in the fewest number of strokes."
