The iconic American innovator is a government agency that neither earns a profit nor sells a single consumer product. But there’s also a deeper lesson: Less can be more. Since its inception as the Advanced Research Projects Agency in the late 1950s, the agency has gotten a lot of bang for its buck by placing shrewd bets on a variety of high-potential areas. During the past decade, DARPA lost its mojo. Distracted by the immediate, DARPA found itself unable to spend hundreds of millions of budgeted dollars. Bowman (communications system) The PRC 355 radio, used at Section/Platoon level as a replacement for the Clansman PRC 351/2 Bowman is the name of the tactical communications system used by the British Armed Forces. Bowman replaced the Clansman series of radios. The concept of Bowman dates from a 1989 UK MoD General Staff Requirement (GSR) for a system to replace the ageing Clansman radio system. The GSR was subsequently modified to accommodate post Cold War scenarios. The procurement had a long and chequered history, with a number of consortia involved in the development and bidding process. Bowman’s initial operating capability was delivered into service in March 2004, it was fully rolled out across the Armed Forces by the end of 2008 and is expected to continue in service until approximately 2026. Bowman provides a tactical voice and data communications system for joint operations across the British Armed Forces in support of land and amphibious operations. Tecnologia - Cientistas acham vulnerabilidade em chip para uso militar Dois especialistas de Cambrige descobriram uma "porta dos fundos" em um chip de computador ultilizado em sistemas militares e de aeronaves como as do modelo Boeing 787, o que permitiria que esse chip fosse acessado via internet, noticiou o The Guardian. Tal achado vem na carona do recém descoberto vírus Flame, o qual vem atacando sistemas de computadores no Irã, Síria e Arábia saudita - o que deve aumentar as preocupações sobre os riscos de ataques virtuais. O Guardian teve acesso a um documento digital onde os cientistas Sergei Korobogatov, da Universidade de Cambridge, e Chris Woods, do Quo Vadis Labs, dizem ter encontrado um método através do qual hackers podem se conectar a um chip da fabricante norte-americana Actel. "Um invasor pode desabilitar toda a segurança do chip, reprogramá-lo criptograficamente e acessar senhas, ou causar danos permanentes ao dispositivo", eles observaram. O chip é fabricado na China, mas os pesquisadores duvidam de uma suposta sabotagem vinda de lá.
