400 Years of the Telescope | For Teachers | A Journey of Science, Technology and Thought This topic can be a little frightening for younger children, and may be better left for the older students. In recent years, astronomers have begun to understand that asteroids (chunks of rock left over from the formation of our solar system) are not just collected in a belt between Mars and Jupiter. A number of them have orbits that carry them into the neighborhoods of other planets, including Earth. The ones that can come near the Earth are called NEO's (Near Earth Objects) or Earth-crossing Asteroids. Astronomers and geologists have accumulated evidence that many asteroids of various sizes have struck the Earth in the past. The Barringer Crater (about one mile across) is an impressive record of one such impact, and is a popular tourist attraction on the route toward the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Students may enjoy doing some book or Internet research on Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which, in 1993, broke into many pieces when it ventured too close to the giant planet Jupiter.

Differentiated Instruction Made Easier Shuana Jordan Product Manager Differentiated instruction creates a learning environment that motivates students to learn and helps meet the diverse needs of individual students. Technology supports differentiated instruction and provides the opportunity to improve teaching and learning. Below are instructional strategies that will encourage differentiated instruction, along with examples of how to apply these basic strategies and recommendations for supporting technology. Tiered strategy Tiered or scaffold activities can help you not only assess student readiness, but also meet students where they are in their understanding of the content. Have students research a topic of interest and create an online presentation on their findings to demonstrate their understanding and applications of key concepts. Reinforce/review strategy Implementing activities that reinforce and review concepts allows you to assess student readiness and evaluate student growth and understanding of the concepts.

Alternative Homework Assignment: Tailgating In this problem we analyze the phenomenon of "tailgating" in a car on a highway at high speeds. This means traveling too close behind the car ahead of you. Tailgating leads to multiple car crashes when one of the cars in a line suddenly slows down. The question we want to answer is: "How close is too close?" To do this, let's suppose you are driving on the highway at a speed of 100 kilometers an hour (a bit more than 60 mph). The car ahead of you suddenly puts on its brakes. (a) First let's estimate how long it takes you to respond. Take a piece of paper and have a friend hold the paper from the middle of one of the short sides hanging straight down. Estimate the time (t2) it takes you to move your foot from the gas pedal to the brake pedal. (b) If you brake hard and fast, you can bring a typical car to rest from 100 kph (about 60 mph) in 5 seconds. (c) Suppose the car ahead of you begins to brake with an acceleration -a0. These problem written and collected by K.

8 Exam-Prep Activities Students Actually Like After Christmas break students will return to school for 8 days of review prior to taking their End of Course Exams. I can give my students a review packet with hundreds of problems, but that would only lead to them giving up, sleeping, and not even trying. So below are 8 fun activities I created to motivate and engage my students in their final exam reviews. 1. Vocabulary Gallery Walk – Each student will be given a word to define and provide an example for. Students will use Sock Puppet or Go Animate to create a mini skit to define and example their word. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. These are 8 fun review games that is sure to get students motivated to review for their final exams! Visit my blog for printables, instructions, and examples!

Exploration Tools 3-D Angles Visualizing three-dimensional structures is a major hurdle for chemistry students. Compounding the difficulty, chemists use three different concepts to imply geometry, although there is no obvious geometric information in two of them. 3-D Angles uses pattern recognition principles introduced through rapid repeated exposure to three concepts to teach students to intuitively associate the three terms together in order to be able to correctly recognize the molecular structure from limited information. Current version 3.0 (October 19, 2010) System requirements Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 Setup program 3-D_Angles_Setup.exe (2.94 MB) Note: If you run 3-D Angles and the program's display appears blank, you need to obtain updated video card drivers that support the OpenGL graphics library. Mad Science Station Labs – Plug and Play Science Stations | Kesler Science I have re-invented how station labs are going to look in my classroom and wanted to shared with you what I believe a much better solution to the traditional science station lab. I’ve developed a system that I’m calling the Mad Science Station Labs Series. It is a plug in play system that allows the station to remain somewhat consistent throughout the year, but allows the teacher to interchange the content very quickly. There are eight total labs stations that the students will visit. They will be required to use all of their skills and they wind their way from station to station. Explore It! Illustrate It! Read It! Watch It! Organize It! Write It! Research It! Assess It!
