Hakeem Jeffries: Brooklyn’s Barack Obama? Is Hakeem Jeffries Brooklyn’s Barack Obama? The young New York assemblyman running for the seat held by retiring Rep. Ed Towns (D) shares some surface characteristics with the president. “They’re both African-American, they’re both strikingly handsome, and they’re both highly intelligent,” said former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, a Jeffries supporter. “Both of them have wonderful smiles.” But the echoes go further than that. Hakeem Jeffries campaigns on April 15, 2012 in Brooklyn. In 2000 and 2002, Jeffries took on state Assemblyman Roger Green (D). “I was victimized by the redistricting process,” Jeffries said. Jeffries challenged Green again anyway, and lost again. Redistricting last decade may have hurt Jeffries, but this time around it could help him. A former associate of the Manhattan firm Paul Weiss, Jeffries has connections to wealthy donors and prominent politicians. Like Obama, Jeffries has earned some ire from liberals for his moderation.

sarahdessen: Beach reading spotted at T... Three TYPO Berlin “Sustain” Talks Online TYPO Berlin “Sustain” is not over yet and already the first presentations are being made available in their entirety on the TYPO Video Portal. Yesterday the talks by Bernd Kolb (D), Daniel van der Velden (E) and Kirsten Dietz (D) were published, and today two of the very best presentations (in my opinion) were released for your viewing pleasure: Nat Hunter (E) and Matthew Butterick (E). Ditch that fake Hollywood crap tonight and get inspired and motivated. But before you do that, join us in 15 minutes for the livestream of the slightly fantabulous Jessica Hische.:: UPDATED :: Bernd Kolb | Opportunities resulting from consequent thinking and actingDeutsch Daniel van der Velden | Memes, Jokes, and Jesters –Political Design In An Age Of TurmoilEnglish Kirsten Dietz | The future belongs to the brave.Seven hypotheses concerning sustainably successful designDeutsch Nat Hunter | How did that happen? Deals and Coupons: Bowflex SelectTech Adjusta... Forget Carbon Taxes...Fat Taxes are coming For the past couple of years, I have been saying that Fat Taxes are coming. And not because our political leaders are overly concerned about our collective beer belly. Fat taxes are coming because: Governments love problems that give them an excuse to raise taxes.Obesity is fast becoming the sort of economic and “moral” problem that allows them raise taxes – ala the sin taxes on cigarettes and alcohol. In the U.S., New York City, California and other jurisdictions have been discussing various forms of fat taxes and fast food restaurant bans for the past couple of years. In Europe, Denmark has a fat tax focused on saturated fat, Hungarians pay a tax on foods with high fat, sugar and salt content, as well as increased tariffs on soda and alcohol and the French have slapped a tax on soda…and are talking about broadening the legislation. And now…the Brits are talking about putting a 20% tax on ALL “unhealthy” foods… …all thanks to 2 new papers published in the British Medical Journal Reference

China Soft-Power Watch: the Yang Rui 'Foreign Bitch' Factor - James Fallows - International [Update: please see this very useful explanatory piece by Brendan O'Kane in China, and a followup by me.] This story is all over the China-hand blogosphere, and is so strange that at first I was sure it was a joke. But apparently it isn't. It involves the man below, shown in a WSJ screen shot, and here is the background to understand the fuss: - CCTV-9 is the English-language channel of China's state-run TV network, and as such is a fascinating real-time window onto the face the government wants to present to the outside world. - A program called "DIALOGUE" is the high-end prestige jewel in the tiara of the CCTV-9 lineup. - The hosts and moderators of the program, a man named YANG RUI and a woman named Tian Wei, are big fish in the China-hand media world. Now, the tricky part. The first time this happened to me, I was startled. This brings us to the recent news. It's interesting that this outburst came from Yang Rui, who is in some ways one of the faces of China's soft power push.
