In this issue, we’re going to take a portrait and replace the person’s image with text (think 2009 Grammy posters). Pick a portrait that offers good contrast—a photo that’s very dramatic and dark probably won’t work as well. Create a new document (File>New) in a size that’s smaller than your photo: the specifics don’t really matter. Switch back to the photograph. Then, press Command-J (PC: Ctrl-J) to copy the selected pixels onto a new layer. Go back to the Select menu and choose Color Range again. Click the Eye icon next to the Background layer in the Layers panel to hide that layer from view. Link shorteners compress very long web addresses into ones that can fit in 140-character tweets. They grew in popularity along with the microblogging service, but have long been dominated by third parties. Since sharing content is such a core part of the experience on Twitter, it’s not surprising that the microblogging network is taking them in house. In fact, the only thing that’s surprising is that it took this long. Chief executive Ev Williams hinted at the move at the company’s developer conference in April, and Twitter has been using shortened links for private direct messages since March to counter spam and phishing attacks. Later this summer, all links shared on Twitter.com or through third-party apps will be wrapped with a t.co URL.

Twitter is Finally Filling the Link-Shortening Hole Twitter, just two months after starting a flame war of sorts over whether it would acquire or go into competition with companies that were just “filling holes” in its service, is finally moving to fill one of the biggest holes the social network has had since it launched: the lack of a built-in link shortener. A post on the Twitter blog explains how the company has been shortening links in direct messages since March, in part to provide more security against phishing attempts — and will soon roll out the use of the t.co link shortener as a “wrapper” for all links. The term “wrapper” means that every link that passes through Twitter will be shortened via the t.co system — and not just long links, but even links that have already been shortened by some other method, such as a competing service like Bit.ly or a white-label version such as the New York Times custom shortener.
