The Lexile ® measure of text is determined using the Lexile Analyzer ®, a software program that evaluates the reading demand—or readability—of books, articles and other materials. The Lexile Analyzer ® measures the complexity of the text by breaking down the entire piece and studying its characteristics, such as sentence length and word frequency, which represent the syntactic and semantic challenges that the text presents to a reader. The outcome is the text complexity, expressed as a Lexile ® measure, along with information on the word count, mean sentence length and mean log frequency.

Modeling Close Reading for Future Teachers: ELA Videos and Webinars In my previous post, I shared how I use freely available video in my reading and literacy methods course to help my preservice teachers (PTs) understand close reading instruction at a level that could not be attained through reading and discussion alone. English for Specific Purposes - Transferring generic features and recontextualizing genre awareness: Understanding writing performance in the ESP genre-based literacy framework Despite the impact of the ESP genre-based framework of teaching discipline-specific writing to L2 learners, especially to L2 graduate students, the writing performance of learners in such a framework is still not fully explored. In this paper, I analyze three article introductions written by a Chinese-speaking graduate student in electrical engineering. My analysis of the student’s writing samples, his annotations of his writing, his literacy narrative, and the interview transcript suggests that the student was able to transfer some previously noticed generic features into his writing. More important, his deployment of these features was motivated by various rhetorical considerations, as evidenced in his efforts to fulfill multiple purposes and to create certain projected reader responses through the rhetorical (re)organization in his writing.

Persuasive Picture Books « Read… Write… Talk… This week we have been working on persuasive writing and speaking skills. Some of the picture books I use are explained below. I read to my students are Earrings! Research demonstrates that “contemplative pedagogy”-the integration of meditative practices into higher education-facilitates the achievement of traditional educational goals such as improved cognitive and academic performance.

Creating Cross-Curricular Text Sets for the Middle Grades by Amanda Wall A text set is a group of texts that share a common theme. Text sets are frequently found in elementary school classrooms, and they can also be a great resource in the middle grades, across the content areas. In my own middle school classroom, I found that text sets encouraged students to explore different aspects of a topic using resources that differed in genre, format and complexity. As a teacher educator, I now work with middle grades preservice teachers in my Literature and Writing course to design text sets for their future classrooms. An Assessment Framework Measuring Student Learning and Achievement as a Means of Demonstrating Institutional Effectiveness Preface This white paper was developed through the collaboration of a dedicated advisory team of community college practitioners and assessment industry experts who worked diligently through meetings, email correspondence, and conference calls to develop the philosophy, content, and structure of the Assessment Framework for the Community College. Questionmark Corporation committed resources to the project to draft the paper, facilitate meetings of the advisory team, and produce the final copy. The paper is labeled version 1.0, indicating that the framework will continue to evolve as educators apply its concepts and principles and identify ways in which to improve and expand its focus.
