Eportfolios
ePortfolios December 16, 2004 George Siemens Electronic portfolios (also referred to as eportfolios or webfolios) are gaining recognition as a valuable tool for learners, instructors, and academic organizations. Bold proclamations laud webfolios as “higher education’s new “got to have it” tool – the show-and-tell platform of the millennium” (Cohen and Hibbitts, 2004), and as a tool that “may have the most significant effect on education since the introduction of formal schooling” (Love, McKean, and Gathercoal, 2004). Laying aside new-technology hype and enthusiasm, eportfolios can best be viewed as a reactionary response to fundamental shifts in learning, teaching, technology, and learner needs in a climate where learning is no longer perceived as confined to formal education. Definition Portfolios have long been the showcase tools of artists – expressions of competencies and work completed. Additional definitions: Portfolio implementations can best be viewed as a continuum. Components Tools

Mike Caulfield » Blog Archive » Loosely coupled assessment Here’s the thing it’s 2000 all over. Eportfolio is the new LMS. Watching a recent vendor presentation I thought “I can’t believe this is happening again.” That single phrase. Because remember — this happened once before. And so Blackboard, an assessment and management tool, determined the pedagogy of colleges for eight or so years. When it wasn’t. How do we avoid it again? There’s only one way — loosely coupled assessment. If we are going to talk assessment, we are going to have to segregate it. We don’t need to talk more about student needs wth vendors that supply assessment tools. Literally: it is not their business. In fact, we should remove student needs entirely from the equation. The students know they can get far bettter solutions to their problems for free elsewhere. So enough of letting assessment vendors tell us what facilities we will be forced to use in their walled garden, and expecting us to be excited about it. Anything else is insanity. Versions of my Online Portfolios by Dr. Helen C. Barrett (a work in process, begun in 2004, last updated June 30, 2013 - 41 tools to date) Introduction to this StudyI am an advocate of using common tools to build electronic portfolios. At certain points in the process, most electronic portfolio artifacts are created with common desktop tools. I should note that there are some issues with publishing portfolios online. I am exploring different online portfolio systems, free web server space or other strategies for developing online electronic portfolios.

ePortfolio - eLearning@UOW: Info for Teaching @ UOW ePortfolio is not just a tool, but a process of engaging students in activities that allow them to identify, reflect on and develop evidence of their developing Graduate Qualities and Professional Skills, and to justify and explain their skills and qualities to others. UOW has been strategically developing and trialling ePortfolio tools and projects since 2002. A University of Wollongong ePortfolio Community was launched on 13th May 2008 via the Innaugural ePortfolio Symposium to celebrate and share the diversity of approaches, activities and tools used by the 2007 and 2008 cohorts. Future plans include working with the emerging National ePortfolio Community (developed and developing by the Carrick ePortfolio project), regular meetings of the UoW ePortfolio Community via CEDIR Academic Staff development programs.
