Watch A Bunch Of Dogs Experience Sunlight And Grass For The First Time Ever wonder what an animal whose whole life has been dedicated to pharmaceutical research looks like when and if it is ever let out of a cage? Reports HuffPo: Forty male beagles raised inside a lab in Spain arrived in Los Angeles last week where they will be put up for adoption after being freed from captivity by the Beagle Freedom Project. The rescue mission is the largest yet for the group Animal Rescue Media Education (ARME). A total of 72 dogs were rescued in the effort, 32 of them having already been adopted in Europe, according to NBC Los Angeles.ARME’s Beagle Freedom Project spokesman Gary Smith said the beagles, all between ages 4 and 7, had lived in cages their entire lives.“We’ve been told they lived one per cage in rooms of 10 beagles, but they never had any physical interaction with one another,” Smith told the station. “They’ve been in kennels since they were rescued about a week ago, but aside from that, they’ve spent most of their lives locked up.” (Jezebel via Anna Holmes)

For a third consecutive year the city of Kaunas, Lithuania approached artist Jolanta Šmidtienė to assist with their annual holiday decorating. Recognizing the city’s somewhat dire financial state the artist challenged herself to build something that wouldn’t rely on any administrative funds set aside for the event. The result: an enormous 13-meter tall Christmas tree made from nearly 40,000 recycled green bottles and zip ties. At night the tree is lit from the inside resulting in a glowing, translucent, emerald green spruce that’s making headlines across the country. I would love it if Chicago had the ambition to do something like this.

Spontaneous Human Combustion Spontaneous Human Combustion Spontaneous human combustion is the alleged burning of a person's body without a readily apparent, identifiable external source of ignition. The combustion may result in simple burns and blisters to the skin, smoking, or a complete incineration of the body. The latter is the form most often recognized as SHC. There is much speculation and controversy over SHC. It is not a proven natural occurrence, but many theories have attempted to explain SHC's existence and how it may occur. History of Spontaneous Human Combustion Many people believe that Spontaneous Human Combustion was first documented in such early texts as the Bible, but, scientifically speaking, these accounts are too old and secondhand to be seen as reliable evidence. Over the past 300 years, there have been more than 200 reports of persons burning to a crisp for no apparent reason. In the 1800's is evidenced in the number of writers that called on it for a dramatic death scene. In the News ...

Carved Book Landscapes by Guy Laramee | Colossal - StumbleUpon (click images for detail) For the better part of three decades multidisciplinary artist Guy Laramee has worked as a stage writer, director, composer, a fabricator of musical instruments, a singer, sculptor, painter and writer. Among his sculptural works are two incredible series of carved book landscapes and structures entitled Biblios and The Great Wall, where the dense pages of old books are excavated to reveal serene mountains, plateaus, and ancient structures. Of these works he says: So I carve landscapes out of books and I paint Romantic landscapes. Mountains of disused knowledge return to what they really are: mountains. Laramee’s next show will be in April of 2012 at the Galerie d’Art d’Outremont in Montreal. Keira Rathbone - Typewriter Artist

Mind-Boggling Shadow Art from Trash Sculptures British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster are a creative team known for their experimental art including these mind-boggling light and shadow sculptures. The duo forms abstract works from, which upon first glance, look like nothing other than straightforward piles of trash. The excitement for the viewer comes when a single light illuminates the pile and creates an entirely new piece of art—usually portraits of themselves—formed with the combination of light and shadow projected onto the wall. Throughout their careers, the artists have, “played with the idea of how humans perceive abstract images and define them with meaning. The result is surprising and powerful as it redefines how abstract forms can transform into figurative ones.” In addition to these shadow sculptures, the team also creates neon light pieces that reference pop culture and flash messages of “everlasting love and hate.” Tim Noble and Sue Webster’s website via [Wicked Game]

Soldier and dog’s reunion video a Web hit | The Upshot How do you say "welcome home" in dog? We're pretty sure this Great Dane Emmitt, nicknamed "Thunderpaws," got his super-excited message across. The overgrown pooch was reuniting with his dad, Trevor Chowder, who was returning from deployment in Afghanistan after spending nine months apart. The loving giant, who is normally not allowed to jump up (you'll see why when you watch the video — he's as tall as his human companion) stares into Trevor's eyes and gives him a hug while standing on his hind legs. [More Ultimate Surprises: Soldier Surprises Mom at Work] Trevor wasn't the only one who enjoyed this furry reunion. And that's really the point. [From Welcome Home Blog: Soldier Surprises Two Year Old Daughter at School] Website founder Chase Holfelder, who has received 500 videos of military reunions, and counting, says: "These videos are undoubtedly heartwarming no matter your political beliefs." If you think this post is cool, you can find more of our latest and more popular posts in the sidebar to the right. The term “Hobo Nickel” describes any small-denomination coin (though, normally soft nickels) that people carve to create miniature reliefs of…well, all sorts of things. This all sounds stimulating, I know, but have a little faith.
